How Transparency Could Be a Win-Win Many are afraid of transparency, and there are seemingly good reasons for this. Clients have better things to do in life than checking their portfolios—moreover, that is often why they hire an asset manager in the first place: to have peace of mind without the need for excessive monitoring of their assets. Asset managers may also be aware of sudden reconciliation errors or valuation inaccuracies, and it may seem better to keep these issues confined to the back office rather than sharing too much data with clients on a daily basis. Finally, there are traditional asset managers who believe that the old-school way of doing business and adhering to tradition fosters greater trust overall. Offering clients an app to view their portfolio performance isn’t about encouraging them to check it daily—it’s about giving them the option to do so whenever they want. This small gesture can have a big impact: clients gain peace of mind knowing they have access to their information at any time, and RMs, by providing such access, reinforce trust in the relationship. Beyond projecting transparency and a “nothing to hide” approach, it also reduces the volume of calls with minor inquiries about portfolio performance, freeing up time for more meaningful conversations. The right way to offer transparency is an art in itself, requiring significant time and brainstorming to get it right.
