Meet Caden. He was a Machinist Intern this past summer and is a Sophomore studying Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University. This summer his goal was to learn everything he could about how a machine shop runs - he operated tools and equipment, wrote code, and better understood the relationship between Machinist and Engineer. "This internship was a stepping stone for me to see how, as an engineer, the decisions I make affect the machinists. I now have a better understanding of how the machine shop runs and can keep in mind how to manufacture things in a streamlined and more efficient way. Think about this. It's the summer before you are entering your Senior year of college, and you are a Mechanical Engineering student. Instead of limiting your internship options, you decide to keep an open mind.     You can choose from being in an office all day behind a computer screen or you can entertain a non-traditional experience which allows you to travel to myriad facilities (locally and out of state), all while learning about mechanical systems in real time. The latter choice was the one Luke Donovan from Lehigh University made.   You might be wondering what this non-traditional Mechanical Engineering internship he chose was. Specifically, it was a chance to experience technical sales with a focus on selling Preventive Maintenance Agreements, and under the mentorship of Asset Management Executive Eli Mimari. With Eli as his guide, Luke not only learned about mechanical systems, but he met with clients and conducted work on the business side. Something he had no previous experience with. As such, he stated his communication and interpersonal skills were tested. He now claims these skills have become his greatest strengths. Further, he emphasized Eli was a fantastic role model. A Journey of Continuous Learning As my internship concluded, one of my mentors Disal Haputhanthrie offered guidance: "Maintain a balance of work and life, for this is just one of many exciting stops along your engineering journey." His words ring true as I reflect on all that I've learned. Over the past months, I've undertaken a variety of fascinating projects. I've designed and fabricated vehicle bodies, analyzed complex mechanical systems through reverse engineering, conducted battery tests, and modified battery modules and cooling systems. Each experience helped strengthen my technical skills and understanding of real-world challenges. Endless thanks go to mentors Chanaka Rathnayake Rangana Vidumal pushpamal karunarathna Disal Haputhanthrie Prasitha Sathsara Madura Herath Indunil Dhanushka for steering me expertly through challenges with patience and support. When I hit the occasional roadblock, their encouragement pushed me to learn from mistakes and give the next problem an even stronger try. It's because of them that I now truly see how many undiscovered areas remain in this creative field. My time at Vega Innovations revealed engineering's depths hold way more than initially met the eye. What once seemed shallow is a vast, intricate domain left to explore. I feel fortunate for the knowledge and confidence gained to do just that. As one chapter closes, I feel energized to start the next. 2024 Internship Spotlight: Carter Scheer "Through this summer at my internship at Ray Martin, I have learned a lot about mechanical contracting. Through my short time at Ray Martin, I have learned how important mechanical contracting is to build a building and all the extra stuff most people don’t think about when it comes to building it. I have been mainly learning about bidding, estimating and how important communication is on every project to make it run smoothly as possible. Ray Martin has been helpful in the fact that everyone there is always there to answer questions and to give me the tools and allow me to figure things out on my own, which allows me to understand the systems a lot better. One of the biggest factors in helping me learn these systems is to be able to compare the drawings to how they are built. I have been grateful for the opportunity Ray Martin has given me and excited for the rest of the summer." I never thought I would share this post, but a sentence from one of the exhibitors still rings in my ear. Like most of the third- and final-year students, I had the privilege of attending the #UTMPremiumCareerFair, hoping to expand my network and understand the current engineering market. After weaving through the crowded aisles, I found a quiet spot at the back of the hall to catch my breath. As I sat there, sipping water, a short-haired lady in a black polo tee with a name card around her neck took a seat beside me. My first instinct was to say, "Hi, how are you? Are you one of the exhibitors here?" I usually don't start conversations with strangers, but this turned out to be one of the most memorable and valuable interactions of my life. She recounted her journey from academia at UTM to 9 years in the working realm and her adventures abroad as an engineer, and I discovered she had walked the same academic path as me, which is a pure mechanical engineering student. Surprisingly, our conversation flowed so naturally; it was as if we were two old friends catching up after years of graduating from high school. As throngs and throngs of people flowed past us, our conversation on personal growth was so deep that it felt like the universe itself paused to listen to us furtively. This, at least to me, is the true power of meaningful communication. "Jack, after talking to you, I think there is something special about you. I hope you can find your true passion and chase it and you are still young so don't miss the chance ." Thank you, Miss Hidayah Sofia Hidzir , I will hold on to these words so closely with me. Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well. Are you an Early Bird? My Master's internship UCAL Ltd. wasn't just my first job, it was a transformative launchpad into the exciting, (and sometimes very demanding!) world of manufacturing. Waking up at 4:45 AM (Monday to Saturday) for the 6:00 AM shift with my cycling buddy, Padmanaban (Paddu) was an adventure in itself. His pre-dawn pep talks and shared bike rides kept my energy high, even when the rooster crowed a little too early. Those early days were filled with enthusiastic learning. I dove headfirst into engineering drawings, eager to contribute. However, a few initial mistakes on my individual tasks – a crucial dimension missed here, a minor detail overlooked there – had a real impact on the manufacturing process. Seeing the consequences firsthand wasn't just humbling, it was a pivotal moment. It ignited a spark of curiosity within me, revealing the intricate dance between design and production. Those errors, instead of discouraging me, fueled a desire to understand the process better. This experience, with all its challenges and triumphs, was a turning point in my career trajectory. Sure, there were early mornings and learning curves, but the dedicated team UCAL Ltd. fostered an environment of growth. From my mistakes, I learned the importance of meticulousness and attention to detail. Perhaps most importantly, I discovered a passion for research in the field of design for manufacturability.
