Did you know that female patients are significantly more likely to be misdiagnosed than male? Gender has often been omitted as a parameter in medical and health research, including in drug development. On September 10th and 11th, we are convening a virtual Nature conference on the topic of "Breaking Barriers for Gender and Health Equity". This conference is the second in the series of Breaking Barriers Nature conferences. The first one, in 2022, focused on the general topic of gender equity and gathered more than 1,600 participants from across the globe. The conference is free to register and will cover various aspects of how gender and health equity intersect. During the event, participants will have the opportunity to participate in a bespoke mentoring scheme, where they will be matched depending on their interests, needs and whether they want to be a mentor or a mentee. Particular care has been given to drawing links between research, policy and practice. The selection of speakers and panellists has been curated by in-house editors from Nature, Nature Medicine, Scientific American and other Springer Nature Group journal and book editors. The event is co-organised by the Springer Nature SDG 5 and SDG 3 working groups and supported by the Springer Nature Women Employee Network. "It's important to understand that investing in women goes beyond just economic empowerment. It includes healthcare research and treatment. The gender gap in healthcare research doesn't just affect women but society as a whole. Let's break it down: 🙎♀️ Women's health issues have often been left out of clinical trials and research, which means there aren't enough effective treatments for conditions that mainly impact women. 👩⚕️ This gap not only slows down the development of targeted healthcare solutions but also worsens existing health disparities, especially for women of color. 🙋♀️ Closing this gap isn't just about being fair, rather making sure everyone has better health outcomes and moving towards a more fair and healthy world. Here's how YOU and ME can help bridge the gap: ✅ Diverse Perspectives in Research: focusing more on conditions that affect women, leading to better data and insights. ✅ Challenging the Status Quo: We need to tackle deep-rooted biases and give women a bigger voice in medical research, aiming for a fair workplace and better representation of women’s health in science. ✅ Early Encouragement: encourage girls interested in STEM from a young age. These future researchers can help close the gender data gap, inspiring the next generation and starting a positive cycle. ✅ Investment in Women's Health Data: Recognizing the importance of sex in disease treatment and improving how data is used in care delivery are crucial steps. I also urge governments, healthcare institutions, and the private sector to prioritize and fund research focusing on women's health issues. Let's push for more inclusive clinical trials that truly represent the diversity of women worldwide. By using digital innovation and technology, we can bridge the gender health gap, ensuring equal access to tools transforming healthcare for all women. Under-investment in Women's Health has a cost for our economy: Did you know that globally, women spend on average 25% more of their lives in poor health compared to men as described by the World Economic Forum's Center for Health and Healthcare. This fact highlights the under-investment in women's health.  Facilitating and prioritizing equal access to innovative healthcare is not just crucial for everyone's well-being – it is also a strategic investment for societies and economies. According to the World Economic Forum's estimate, addressing the women's health gap could potentially generate USD 1 trillion in annual productivity gains for the global economy, potentially leading to a 1.7% increase in per capita GDP. EU countries generally fare better on Health Equality than on Gender Equality (average index 88.5 vs. 70.2), yet some room for further improvement remains. Belgium ranks 5th for Gender Equality but falls to 11th place in Health Equality compared to other EU countries, lagging behind countries like Italy and Germany who score significantly lower on the total Gender Equality index. These gaps in the Health dimension do not only impact individual well-being but negatively affect families, societies and economies. Consider these key points as potential improvement areas: 1️⃣ Clinical Trials and Treatments: Women are underrepresented in clinical trials, resulting in fewer tailored treatments 2️⃣ Undiagnosed Conditions: Four women go undiagnosed for every diagnosed case, indicating gaps in equal healthcare access 3️⃣ R&D Investment: There is a lack of investment in research and development for women's specific health conditions 4️⃣ Funding Gap: FemTech companies receive only 3% of total digital health funding, limiting their innovation ability Ensuring that women have equal access to innovative and specific healthcare is not just about a moral imperative – it is about one of the best investments for societal well-being and economic prosperity. In the framework of the celebration of the #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience, which is #11February, and as OneHealth Community of Practice, an approach that promotes #equity, #genderparity, access and #inclusion of all voices involved but especially those that have been marginalized, we call to join efforts to close the existing gender gaps in the scientific field. In the #OneHealth approach with a #gender perspective we need 1. policies and regulatory frameworks that encourage the equal participation of women in scientific and academic scenarios, 2. protocols and clear routes in the work to address situations of injustices such as discrimination, lack of recognition and invisibilization of #women #researchers , 3. creation of educational content that allows boys and girls to understand and visualize harmful and toxic behaviors in all areas of society so as not to repeat them, 4. mechanisms for the recognition and support of women scientists in their communities, generating higher levels of #self-esteem and #well-being. 5. training of leaders (both men and women) in gender equity in UnaSalud's field of knowledge. We need leaders who discourage the culture of individualism, competitiveness, lack of transparency and principles. It is the leaders who initiate change and social transformation. As we celebrate International Women’s month, let's recognise how far we have come in improving healthcare for all women while acknowledging the disparities minority women still face. According to the Health&Care Professions Council Diversity Data Report 2021, only 34% of managerial roles in the healthcare industry are held by minority communities, emphasising the immense need for diverse perspectives in decision-making in women’s health. This is especially crucial as a 2021 European study found that female migrants have a 60% higher chance of needing and not having access to healthcare services, highlighing how crucial inclusive healthcare is. What’s more, during 2018-2020, a study found that maternal mortality was 3.7x higher within the black communities and 1.7x higher in Asian communities when compared to white communities. Expanding healthcare access to hidden communities, providing culturally sensitive care, and diversifying the healthcare workforce has never been more important.
