It’s been an incredible day at Discovery Day 2024! 🌏 This year's theme, "Trends come and go, geoscience is foundational," truly resonated as we explored the new developments in geoscience that are shaping the future of exploration, investment, and land-use planning in South Australia. From cutting-edge geological insights to the unveiling of world-leading technology, it’s clear that geoscience is the backbone of the future. Key highlights: 👨💼 A heartfelt opening address by our retiring Chief Executive and renowned geologist Dr Paul Heithersay, whose decades of work have greatly impacted the field. 📚 The HyLogger 4, our new, state-of-the-art hyperspectral technology, was announced after its recent installation at our Drill Core Library, helping us take geoscience research to the next level! We have an excellent on-line training and upskilling opportunity coming up in late October - November 2024 for anyone interested in near-mine mineral exploration. CODES - Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences at the University of Tasmania will be running our biannual Exploration in Brownfields Terrains unit, which is open to anyone to participate in, and which is delivered as part of our Master of Economic Geology program. It covers geological, geophysical and geochemical exploration in near mine environments and this year will include a component of Geodata Analytics as part of the program. The unit will be delivered live on-line in two week-long intensive blocks from 28th October to 2nd November and from 18-22nd November. The attached flyer outlines our excellent series of guest speakers, including Wessley Edgar, Kim Frankcombe, Kate Hine, Terry Hoschke, Ned Howard, David Isles, Andrew McNeill, Chris Muller, Jo Whelan, Tony Webster and Lesley Wyborn. 🎉 NEW REPORT 📖 Geochemistry of drill core samples from the Stuart Shelf region, South Australia - Data release 2 🙂 D.C. Champion, D.L. Huston, E. Bastrakov, A. Fabris, C. Krapf, S. Gilmore, J. Byass, I. Long and S. Webber 🏦 Published by Geoscience Australia 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gTP4JdA2 The 'Geochemistry for Basin Prospectivity' project is part of Geoscience Australia's Exploring for the Future (EFTF), focusing on studying Australian basins with potential base metal mineral systems. In collaboration with the GSSA, this project investigates the baseline geochemistry of the Stuart Shelf and complements the GSSA-CSIRO project 'Sedimentary Copper Mineral Systems of the Stuart Shelf (read more: https://ow.ly/MULa50PLpIL). This report discusses all the final results from the project, and releases all the geochemical data collected from across the Stuart Shelf. In total, 888 drill core samples from 22 drillholes were analysed, targeting units from the Neoproterozoic sedimentary succession and underlying basement units. It was a great turnout at yesterday’s 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 conference - the increased global interest in Queensland’s critical minerals opportunities was a key focus. A number of presentations explored how it has become a driving influence for the Geological Survey of Queensland’s programs.    GSQ’s Director of Minerals Geoscience, Janelle Kerr, spoke about how the research, data acquisition and programs are evolving to help fast track industry’s exploration.   “… We seek to provide data and knowledge that can give explorers a leg up in deciding where to spend their resources of time and money. Our projects range from regional geophysics, through various scales of geological mapping, to microscopic characterisation. Collaboration has always been a key part of the geoscience focused projects we run in the GSQ – through collaboration, we can bring together many bright minds to solve difficult questions and generate valuable knowledge.”   Attendees were able to talk with GSQ staff throughout the day and discuss what support for Queensland’s resources sector looks like into the future.
