🔎An increasing number of food companies are prioritizing clean labels as more conscious consumers seek transparency about their food choices. In our clean label feature in the Q2 2024 edition of Protein Production Technology International, we interview MJ Kinney, Founder of FareScience, which she set up to help formulate and commercialize alternative protein products. 🏷️ What’s on the label is something that must be defined from the beginning of a product’s development path, she rightly notes. 💡In advising clients, Kinney ensures they are aware of the potential downsides involved in responding to industry trends, explaining that logical fallacies around food often go unaddressed, fueling misinformation at the expense of public health. “When brands profit from affirming false narratives, they reinforce the very distrust of authority that leaves people vulnerable to conspiracy theories. In other words, chasing trends can promote delusion over science." 👓 Dive more into the world of clean label here: https://hubs.ly/Q02wWVGD0 #cleanlabel #innovation #alternativeproteins #novelfood #foodofthefuture #cleanfood

Forever chemicals, like PFAS, are a pressing challenge across industries, and in food packaging, we're seeing innovative solutions emerge. The study ‘Breaking the Chain,’ launched today by Systemiq Ltd., highlights both the urgency of phasing out PFAS and the opportunity it presents for value chain players. Those who act early, anticipating regulatory shifts, will gain a competitive advantage. By adopting safer, sustainable alternatives now, businesses can reduce long-term risks while leading the way in responsible food packaging solutions. Want to learn more about the challenges and solutions for businesses and policymakers? Explore the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dYG__mdR
📣 We're excited to announce the launch of Systemiq’s latest report, 'Breaking the Chain: Risks, Regulations, and Roadmap for Phasing Out PFAS from Food Delivery Packaging'. As the food delivery industry continues to grow, the hidden risk of PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals", in packaging cannot be ignored. PFAS are commonly used for their water- and grease-resistant properties, but they persist in the environment and pose serious health risks, including hormone disruption and cancer. 'Breaking the Chain' takes a holistic approach to examining the risks, regulatory trends, and potential solutions to phasing out PFAS in food delivery packaging. Key Insights: 🔹 PFAS are widely used in food delivery packaging, with one study identifying PFAS in 75% of disposable food packaging samples across six European countries. 🔹 Phasing out PFAS from food delivery packaging is feasible – and businesses across the globe are already making it happen. A variety of alternatives exist, each with its own pros and cons. 🔹 Businesses can act now, taking control of the transition to minimise risks and potential future disruption. Governments can speed up the transition with clear definitions, regulatory certainty and targeted incentives for sustainable alternatives. The Council of the European Union has recently released draft conclusions on ‘a competitive European industry driving our green, digital and resilient future’. FFE supports these recommendations, which include: ➡ Calling on the European Commission to make biotech and horizontal aspects of the bioeconomy an elementary part of the EU’s industrial policy. ➡ Recalling the need to strengthen Europe’s position in critical sectors, such as food, via the development of sustainable supply chains, EU-based production, and R&D capacities, as well as the diversification of trade partners. ➡ Highlighting the importance of a favorable environment in which businesses, particularly SMEs, can thrive and scale up. ➡ Accelerating permitting procedures for projects contributing to the green and digital transition. ➡ Defining common European strategic priorities regarding innovation, which should be done by involving a wide range of relevant actors in a joint exercise. We believe that modern fermentation techniques can help position Europe as a leader in the innovation space, with a focus on sustainable food production, and look forward to joining forces with partners, the Council and the Commission on the next steps. 🏷️ Marc Coloma, CEO & Co-Founder of Heura Foods, says clean labeling is a fundamental principle guiding his work. 🗺️ “Consumers seek transparency in labeling, driven by concerns for health, sustainability, and access to information. This trend reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences toward informed, conscious choices in food purchases.” But, Marc adds, “We need to shift the pressure off consumers and bring it to the industry. We need to be the ones assuring the products we deliver are respecting the environment and people’s health – and not relying on animals to do so." 📰 Hear more from Marc and others in our full feature on clean labels in the latest edition of Protein Production Technology International. 🔗https://hubs.ly/Q02D0q-K0 #cleanlabel #ingredients #alternativeprotein #plantbased
