I work in a fast-paced research environment, with a never-ending conveyer belt of work, long days, focused deadlines, and unplanned extras that often throw a spanner into the works. Sounds like every workplace, right? It takes a dedicated team with their eye on the mission to come together and do their best to win the week. I’m privileged to be part of one such team. Every weekend, I like to reflect on the wins we had in our department during the past week. It’s easy to focus on the frustrations, the curveballs, or what you didn’t quite check off the To Do list. A little positive reframing is not just a good reminder of what went well, but also sets me up for a positive start to the new week. I must try to remember to share some wins here! It makes them seem more real. What wins did you have last week? ———————————————— SOME OF OUR LAST WEEK’S WINS ✅ One of our senior team leads returned after 6 weeks away for surgery. It was a joy for us all to see him back doing so well, and in such fabulous spirits. ✅ Successful and early completion of one phase of a complex project that had been fraught with challenges. ✅ A couple of productive team meetings. ✅ I managed to work from home on Friday, which gave me a little breathing space to focus on a few tasks that needed my full concentration. ✅ A fun professional development exercise for the team during one meeting, where we all took a quiz to identify what “Business Animal” we were! ❤️

Teamwork learned from Cicadas this week: I spent a great week in Chicago this week with one of our clients and then for a team meeting. If you don't live in Chicago, you may not be aware of the volume of the 17-year cicada brood. When I say 'volume' it isn't just numbers, it is sound-level-volume. They are LOUD. It took some getting used to the noise and chaos, but once I stopped to really assess, there was a symphonic quality to the sound. How do each of their different sounds come together to sound like waves crashing on a beach? It is a good reminder to bring our voices together for aligned purpose on our teams, even when we come from different places.
