In the face of Europe's escalating water-related challenges – ranging from droughts and water scarcity to floods and aging infrastructure – the call for bolstering EU's water resilience has never been more urgent 🚨   This week, a Euronews article featured my insights on the essential recognition of water as a strategic resource. I underscored the critical need to integrate water efficiency, smart water management technologies, and solid conservation policies – all pivotal in steering Europe towards a sustainable and resilient water future.   Yet, to truly realize this vision, a comprehensive #WaterStrategy is paramount. This strategy must be underpinned by a clear timeline, actionable steps, and robust funding. The 10th World Water Forum website states: “In the midst of current population growth and climate change, I would like to emphasize several important agendas that must be prioritized, as follows: water conservation efforts; availability of clean water and sanitation; food and energy security; as well as mitigation of natural disasters such as floods and droughts.” https://lnkd.in/dPbkr9Nc The Forum brings together participants from all levels and sectors, including politics, multilateral institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector. Therefore, it would be great if the organisers and participants of this forum would take the opportunity to set an example that there is no such thing as a natural disaster and help change the way organisations, politicians, the media and people in positions of power talk about disasters. The term 'natural disaster' is wrong and misleading. Building on decades of work and research by disaster risk reduction practitioners and academics, the #NoNaturalDisasters campaign aims to change the terminology to show that while some hazards are natural and unavoidable, the resulting disasters are almost always caused by human actions and decisions. https://lnkd.in/eWKppQYN #water #flood #droughts
