At #COP16, financing the implementation of the Kunming – Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is at the heart of negotiations. Subsidies that harm biodiversity are also being discussed. *Every year governments spend US$470 billion on agricultural subsidies that harm biodiversity and nature.* This staggering number comes from a thoroughly researched recent WWF report. It advocates for a *Repurposing Agenda* and to use these subsidies to enhance sustainable food systems. When governments adopted the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in December 2022, they also agreed to Target 18. Part of this target is an assignment to governments to have identified these harmful subsidies by 2025. This is next year. As Selorm Kobla Kugbega, Research Fellow at SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute, states in his article, the story of #agrifood systems has two sides: a crucial role in food production and economic growth and a significant impact on natural ecosystems. Both are true, yet we now have a unique opportunity to bridge #agriculture and #biodiversity, moving toward a net positive contribution to biodiversity. It’s time to go beyond political rhetoric and focus on practical, actionable steps. Scaling up nature-friendly production models, strengthening conservation enforcement, and implementing policy measures to support sustainable agriculture transitions are critical steps toward a future where agrifood systems sustain, rather than deplete, our ecosystems. Another example of how the bioeconomy is emerging as a topic in global arenas is the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting Communiqué. The communiqué incorporates bioeconomy as a significant element in their discussions and commitments. The World Bioeconomy Association reading on some key points from the document: 🌱Support for Circular and Sustainable Bioeconomy: • Promotes circular and sustainable bioeconomy solutions to prevent degradation and regenerate soils. • Emphasizes sustainable production of food, raw materials, bio-products, and bioenergy while combating biodiversity loss and climate change. ♻️ Efficiency and Circularity: • Ensures sustainable and efficient use of biological resources, preventing waste and encouraging recycling. • Enhances sustainability in agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, and forestry to support land use and biodiversity. 💡💰Innovative Technologies and Investments: • Stresses the need for investment in innovations that bring social, economic, and environmental benefits. • Focuses on research to manage land use pressures and increase sustainable production efficiencies. 🤝 Partnership and Collaboration: • Shares successful circular and sustainable bioeconomy solutions at all levels. • Notes initiatives like Italy's technical workshop for robust bioeconomy indicators. 💵📜 Financial Support and Regulatory Frameworks: • Calls for increased financial support from public and private sectors. • Develops regulatory frameworks supporting bioeconomy growth and environmental sustainability. 📚Capacity Building: • Enhances education, training, and skills development in bio-based sectors through capacity building and knowledge sharing. 🌳🚜Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry: • Promotes sustainable agricultural and forestry practices to support land use, soil health, and biodiversity conservation. Now things are happening in the EU. The important climate value of the forest is not as a #carbon garage.
