From the moment we enter the world, we are greeted by the embrace of someone’s arms. ~This fundamental sense of care, ingrained from the beginning of our existence, is a paramount consideration in architecture. As children, we instinctively construct sanctuaries - intimate, sheltered spaces where we dictate the boundaries. ~Later in life, unconsciously, we gravitate towards designs, furnishings and homes that prioritise comfort and security. Whether it's a sunlit wall or a well-cushioned chair, architecture takes on the role of an embracing arm or a steadfast support. In architecture, the quest for comfort encompasses all aspects of human positioning - whether sitting, standing or lying down. The workplace of today is more focused on the tenant experience and commercial real estate (CRE) landlords can be part of giving office tenants and their employees a reason to commute again. Sustainability initiatives and wellness amenities can provide a better experience for employees and an incentive for them to do their jobs from the workplace. Active Stairs design in existing buildings uses colour and artwork to reflect the building design, context and tenant profile. Designs can be multilingual, incorporate pictures and include positive messaging to highlight the benefits of taking the stairs.

After reading this blog about barrier-free home and office design, I’ve been feeling inspired to think about what this truly means—especially as my mom, now in a wheelchair after a stroke, adjusts to new ways of navigating the world using only her right hand. For her, a barrier-free home would represent freedom and empowerment. It’s about much more than wider doorways and ramps; it’s about creating a space that supports her independence, comfort, and dignity. Thoughtful features like accessible kitchens, easy-to-use handles, and smart home technology could make her day-to-day life so much easier, and more importantly, give her the confidence to enjoy her home on her own terms. This journey has opened my eyes to the power of design to improve lives. It’s not just about meeting regulations—it’s about creating environments that truly support people and their unique needs.
