Reducing the climate impact of our product transports is a key component of our global emission reduction plan. To advance on our action plan, we always test and evaluate new transport means, routes as well as fuel sources. Our latest pilot is a three-month pilot project that sees to the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (a type of biofuel known as HVO100)- instead of fossil-based fuel, for all our products’ ground transports from Sweden to Germany, France, and the Netherlands. While the project introduces a new workflow, adding an extra supplier to our transport processes, it also sees a substantial reduction of the climate footprint associated with the transports mentioned. In nature, there exists a carbon cycle, where growing plants absorb atmospheric CO2 via photosynthesis and then that CO2 returns to the atmosphere when crop residues are burnt, land spread or landfilled. RBE’s innovative ECHO2 technology aims to disrupt this cycle with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions. So instead of burning or putting those crop residues in landfills, we can process it through an ECHO2 as feedstock, which is then converted to biochar (carbon solids). When this biochar is used for soil enrichment, or in some industrial applications, it locks away much of the carbon from returning to the atmosphere. Emerging science indicates that biochar produced in the right process conditions prevents carbon from returning to the atmosphere for geologic time scales. Clean syngas fuel, which is another by-product of the ECHO2 process, can be combusted to produce useful heat or power. The biogenic carbon that makes up some of the syngas does return to the atmosphere, however, when used to offset the use of fossil fuels, this clean renewable syngas avoids additional new CO2 entering the atmosphere, leading to the overall process still being carbon negative. For each dry tonne of feedstock, the ECHO2 produces ~0.4t of high carbon biochar, which when utilised appropriately can lead to ~1.0t of CO2 removed from the atmosphere. Around 4.2 GJ of clean syngas is also produced by the ECHO for this amount of feedstock which is classified as a net zero renewable fuel. #carboncycle #agriwaste #biochar #syngas

Minister for Climate and Environment Kai Mykkänen stated that without significant carbon capture, storage, and utilisation, it would be difficult to reach climate goals ♻️ 🌳 In Finland, approximately 28 Mt of biogenic carbon dioxide is produced annually from large point sources as a by-product of industrial wood processing and energy production. ⛽ Currently, there are around 15 projects planned in Finland, aiming to implement carbon dioxide capture. In these projects, the captured carbon dioxide will mainly be used for the production of synthetic fuels. How would we advance carbon capture and utilisation?
