In a world where political leadership is often overshadowed by personal gain and theatrics, sitting down with Irungu Nyakera, #DDWithMaqC's 11th guest, offered a refreshing and transformative conversation. As the Founder of the Irungu Nyakera Foundation, Party Leader & Chair of the #FarmersParty as well as the current chairperson of Kenya Medical Supplies Authority, we discussed his work in both the private and public sectors and his connection to championing advocacy for farmers, youth, and community development. Some key highlights 💡 Limited support and resources for local development can be addressed by expanding #scholarships, #mentorship programs, and local #sportssupport through collaborations with local leaders. 💡 #Agriculturaladvocacy efforts that focus on improving farmers' rights and pay, addressing high import costs, and establishing the Farmers Party to prioritize agriculture. 💡 Mentorship, career talks, and #vocationaltraining to address high youth unemployment and lack of vocational training opportunities, with the goal of increasing enrollment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. These and other such insights will be featured in The Lives, Times, & Chapters of Luminaries Making Good Happen in Africa, a book featuring reflections from Leaders and Practitioners in the Development and Social Impact Ecosystem launching on the 26th of Sept 2024. Stay tuned for more details. Watch Irungu Nyakera's full story here! https://bit.ly/47lDd90 #NyakeraIrungu on #DDWithMaqC #DDAt5 #DevelopmentDynamics

The Kenya National Farmers’ Federation (KENAFF) and iCRA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide top-notch agribusiness training to Kenyan farmers. iCRA, a Netherlands-based foundation with over 35 years of expertise in agriculture, joins forces with KENAFF to strengthen agricultural value chains. The MoU, signed on March 21 at KENAFF Headquarters, aims to professionalize KENAFF County Associations, enhance members' business skills, and bolster advocacy efforts at the county level. Youth empowerment is a key focus, with plans to revive 4K Clubs in schools to instill practical skills and entrepreneurship. Affordable training services tailored to specific member categories will be developed to equip farmers with essential skills. The partnership will also offer leadership and staff development programs to enhance engagement at the county level. Additionally, joint fundraising initiatives will address climate-smart agriculture, gender programming, and agricultural innovations. #Edutainment does more than entertain. It shapes our understanding of the world and sparks change – and even the use of #FinancialServices. 📽💸 Programs like Makutano Junction have demonstrated this impact, inspiring 138,000 low-income women in Kenya to open savings accounts. Now, Makutano Mamas aims to inform and inspire rural women’s use of SACCOs in #Kenya. By combining relatable characters with key information on how SACCOs work and are led, this reboot can strengthen the role that vital financial service providers play in rural areas. CGAP, The World Bank Food and Agriculture Global Practice (AGF), and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) believe that informed storytelling can strengthen rural #SACCOs and encourage women’s participation in their leadership. Join us in exploring how edutainment can continue to drive #FinancialInclusion. Share your research or examples of how it’s improving financial lives! 🌿📂 Engaging and empowering a generation of agripreneurs Generation Unlimited and SNV are partnering to skill and connect young people in Kenya, particularly girls and young women who are out of school, unemployed and underemployed, with employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in agriculture. Through the Engaging Kenyan Youth in Agriculture and Nutrition (EKYAN) programme funded by the Government of Netherlands and a private sector company, this partnership will build skills and facilitate access to finance and market opportunities in agripreneurship for 3,200 young people, particularly women and young mothers, across Kirinyaga, Kisumu, Busia and Samburu counties, enabling them to start a business or transition into the job market. Announced at the 2024 #GYEOSummit in Washington DC by Iliana Albino, Generation Unlimited Deputy Director of Partnerships, and Jean Muthamia-Mwenda, Global Lead, Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship at SNV, this initiative aligns with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) Policy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing youth unemployment and fostering sustainable economic growth through green training and jobs. The agriculture sector presents substantial employment opportunities for young people, contributing significantly to agricultural growth and food security in Kenya. #SkillsRightNow #SNVImpactThatMatters #GreenRising #YouthEmpowerment

Although Africa contributes to only about 2% of global research outputs, less than 0.1% is progressed to patents and industry outputs within the continent. Most of it remains in print journals or online resources and benefits others. Development of these research outputs into industrial products would help solve the myriad of social, economic, nutritional, diseases, poverty among other problems prevalent particularly in sub-saharan Africa. As a beneficiary of the current training in International career writing program (ICWP), I choose items no.1 Starting a business and no. 10 to start a community project within my research area, to define my enterpreneur thinking. A business or a community project focused to address health, nutrition and disease remedies for local communities, is an area that requires improvement as such issues impede severely the development of Africa. I have been involved in a community engagement research before funded by Welcome Trust that focused on prevention of livestock diseases. Our research team brought together a group villagers in a rural area in Kenya who progressed to establish a community based organization (CBO). Working together improved their social and economic capital resulting to better lives. Starting a business will demonstrate problem solving and sustainability. It is time researchers and academics transform into enterpreneur thinkers! Today’s CALA Alumni webinar on "Youth and Inclusion in Agriculture -The Role of Youth in Food Systems Transformation" highlighted key challenges that young people face in agriculture: - Access to land (especially for women) - Access to finance for advancing projects - Access to markets, where middlemen often dominate - Access to skills and the need for mentors offering guidance and support To address these challenges, we heard from countries like Rwanda, Ghana and Tanzania, which have made some significant strides by: - Investing in digital infrastructure to support agriculture and entrepreneurship - Lowering the cost of access to technology to empower youth innovations - Prioritizing youth empowerment with policies that focus on inclusion and skills development - Considering youth cooperatives where youth can galvanize resources for joint impact By responding in similar ways, we can create opportunities for youth to drive the transformation of food systems across Africa and beyond. A big thank you to our panelists Solange Tetero Millicent Agidipo Adoboe Seth Charles Mkisi and benson wando for sharing their welath of insights and vast experience. May God continue to increase your impact as you serve the next generation of agriculture world-changers. The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA) programme is an AGRA initiative. Can you help accelerate Ali's entrepreneurial journey by providing the connections he needs?
Ali Issah – From Teacher to Agropreneur, Transforming Cassava and Communities Ali Issah, a passionate innovator from Bonsua, Ghana, is leading a movement in sustainable agriculture. As co-founder of Progral Agro Processing Ltd., he processes cassava into gari, supporting farmers and empowering his community. Starting as a mathematics teacher, Ali realized the transformative power of education AND agriculture. Today, his venture is a lifeline for local cassava farmers and a hub for creating jobs, especially for women and youth. But it hasn’t been easy. Ali faced climate change head-on, losing 10 acres of crops - but he didn’t give up. His resilience is unmatched, replanting and rising stronger than ever. Ali’s vision: To grow Progral into a leading African food chain, improve operations, and build partnerships with organizations like @CAMFED Ghana to make an even bigger impact. Ali is seeking connections to supply gari to CAMFED beneficiaries, specifically female secondary schools. His goal is to expand his reach and positively impact even more lives. Let's support this inspiring journey of resilience, innovation, and community empowerment! #Africa2100 #Entrepreneurship #Sustainability #AgricultureLeadership

#InternationalYouthDay, I celebrate all hard-working youths who are, indeed, the future of agriculture in our rural communities. I speak as a fellow rural youth farmer, I know very well we share the challenges in this sector: long hours, physical labor, uncertainties of weather, and markets. It may not be easy, but I tell you that your work is invaluable, and you should be proud. We grow the food that sustains our families and communities. We grow the crops that help feed the world. We raise the livestock that provide sustenance and livelihood. Youngers are the backbone of rural farms, and we are the backbone of food security. And so, as we commemorate International Youth Day, I beseech you to find identity as a rural youth farmer. Stand proud of the significant work that we do. Be resolute to learn and forge innovations continuously, thus making our farms and our lives even brighter. Together we can show the world what rural youth are made of—a force in agriculture. We can be change-makers, leaders, and transformers of our communities. We will keep growing the food, cultivating the land, and building the strength of the foundation on which our familial and national units are dependent. Our work is not easy, but it is so very important, and the rural youth form such an important part of it. Wishing you all a productive and very rewarding International Youth Day! #sustainable #agriculture. PELUM Kenya Association PELUM Kenya Association Bathseba Ratemo Norec

Some years ago, I worked on an European Commission EU funded project on Eliminating Violence against Children (EVAC) Project in Uganda as a #Project Coordinator. *Yes, I have previously coordinated an EU funded project!* The project aimed at addressing both structural and societal based issues that perpetuate and increase the vulnerability of children to violence, including inherent cultural practices like #FGM. The project had both preventive and responsive strategies and included working with children themselves, and an #ecosystem of players and #stakeholders. In this particular picture, we had the first sports competition for selected schools from Sebei subregion(Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo districts) and Karamoja subregion (Amudat District), as one of the ways of promoting #children #participation in #cocurricular activities. It required alot of #communication skills and #stakeholderengagement to have key stakeholders buy-in to this innovation but it was worth it. We actually loved our red T-shirts and even for such events, it was a honor wearing them for project #visibility and #identity. So, while we know that such trophies are for "big teams", with this innovation, the best schools and children skilled in sports went home with the trophies. What an impact and positive change it was! So, key in project management and leadership therefore is #innovationand it can only be achieved when we let our technical staff do the technical jobs. One of my strength is being #Innovative and #thinkingoutsidethebox. If you are running an institution or implementing a program, and you feel like nothing is new and interesting, reach out to me. Sustainable Development requires shifting away from the old usual ways of doing things. #innovation, #leadership, #changemakers
