BrightCarbon was certified for our 1% for the Planet giving for 2023 last month. That means we donated 1% of our annual revenue (not profit) for last year to environmental causes. We'll do it again in future years too. Our two largest donations were to Cool Earth and Earthjustice - although we also gave to five national and local charities. Our BrightCarbon environment committee suggested organisations we could donate to, and then all employees were given a chance to vote on those choices - with our giving proportionate to the votes received in different categories. I'm not certain, but I hope that involving the entire team makes this feel like everyone's donation - we all worked to make the money, and we all had a say in where it was spent. 1% of our revenue isn't going to be enough to save the planet, obviously. But if more companies did this, more good would be done. At a time when people are looking for meaning in what they do, this makes every project we deliver count for something bigger too. No greenwashing, no navel-gazing, just one small attempt to do some good. P.S. A photo of the northern lights, which I completely missed last week when they were actually visible from my street.

Day 21; Declutter and Donate Unused Materials Decluttering ones home is not only a practical way to organize our living space but also an opportunity to give back to those in need and promote sustainable consumption. By donating clothing and unused materials, you can extend the lifecycle of items, reduce waste, and support charitable organizations that provide essential resources to individuals and communities. By decluttering and donating items we no longer need or use, we create space for what truly matters and cultivate a sense of simplicity and balance in our lives. For me one very way of doing this, is by giving my younger siblings some of the things I no longer need anymore or reselling at a cheaper rate. It’s more like a normal practice for while growing up. And reading about how it contribute to sustainability today, I am glad I’m on the right part. I also encourage you to be part of this journey. #Eco30Impact

Each book was contributed by the amazing people in their community, turning this tree into a symbol of generosity, creativity, and care for the planet. Why we love it: Sustainability in action – No need for plastic or chopping down trees! Community spirit – Built together, with donations from all corners of the park. CSR done right – Supporting education and literacy by donating the books to local charities after the season. ESG leadership – Reducing waste and showing how businesses can celebrate sustainably. As Earth Day approaches, it's time to reflect on our planet's beauty and our responsibility to protect it. We are doing our small part to positively impact the environment by pledging funds to Trees That Count a collective and inclusive mission to plant native trees across New Zealand. We’ve also setup a tree registry page on their website, with the aim of donating 2,000 trees (twice the number from 2023), in the lead up to IANZ’s annual conference this year, in August.
