Post 2 of 4: Applying Leadership Lessons from Everyday Tasks As with different types of leaves, employees are not a one-size-fits-all product. There are business processes where uniformity is required such as onboarding and employee handbooks, but these processes don’t always reflect reality. Some employees are motivated by oversight, rewards, and clear expectations, while others are driven by deeper, intrinsic motivations. Some may even disengage, leading to “quiet quitting” or contributing to a toxic work environment that can drag down team morale. Leadership, in this sense, is more about tending to the garden more than enforcing rules. Patience and persistence are critical tools for navigating the diverse needs of your team. Just as some leaves require more effort to clear, some employees need tailored support, encouragement, and understanding. As leaders we must create connections with individuals, discovering what drives each person to succeed and thrive. Though this may seem time-consuming, the payoff is a team of more autonomous, engaged employees in the future. Actionable Advice: • Be patient and persistent in addressing employee motivation—quick fixes seldom work. Take the time to uncover each individual’s unique drivers. • Adjust your leadership approach to suit the needs of individual team members, based on each employee’s needs. • Reflect on your leadership style.
