Thrilled to announce my latest publication with my colleague Yamini Chandra Ph.D. (Psychology and Entrepreneurship)! Our paper, titled "Simulation Exercise: Learning Entrepreneurship Through Local Market Business Opportunity Identification," has been published in the IMIB Journal of Innovation and Management. Designed for students across various programs, this simulation exercise enables learners to explore the entrepreneurial landscape of local, livelihood-based businesses—essential, day-to-day businesses that sustain communities, especially in India. As an entrepreneurship educator, I emphasize that innovation extends beyond startups; it’s embedded in grassroots businesses, where resilience, empathy, and resourcefulness are key. Our simulation introduces students to "bottom of the pyramid" entrepreneurship and empowers them to apply critical Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (KSAs) using a hands-on approach based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. Spanning cities like Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Nagpur, our students uncovered universal vendor challenges, documented their findings, and crafted solutions presented through business model canvases. These insights were then shared back with vendors, some of whom are now implementing them! This journey in experiential learning offers valuable resources for instructors, with teaching notes included for classroom discussion. Access the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/dBg4d6ZX

Tackling Youth Unemployment: A Call to Action For many, a good education has traditionally been seen as a passport out of poverty and into the middle or affluent class. However, this belief is now being challenged. Alarmingly, 35% of IIT graduates and nearly 20% of IIM graduates are still searching for jobs this year. If prestigious institutions can't guarantee employment, what hope is there for the millions of other graduates? The recently published ILO report on youth unemployment in India (https://lnkd.in/dvih_Vtj) reveals a stark reality: - A young person with a college degree is nine times more likely to be unemployed than their illiterate counterpart. This highlights both the questionable quality of degrees and the predominance of low-end job opportunities. - Youths make up nearly 83% of the unemployed population in India. The disconnect between the education system and the job market is a primary reason for this high unemployment rate among educated youth. There are two key issues at play: 1. Quality of Education: The education imparted at many institutions fails to meet industry standards and expectations. 2. Mismatch Between Education and Job Market Needs: There is no strategic mapping of job requirements to educational outcomes, reflecting a lack of effective policy or strategic approach. Ravi Venkatesan, in his article, suggests that to address the jobs crisis in India, there needs to be a shift in focus from elite-driven economic growth and large firms to fostering grassroots entrepreneurship. This means: 1. Encouraging Mass Entrepreneurship: Similar to how sports like cricket and chess have become inclusive and accessible to many, there should be a broad movement to promote entrepreneurship across the country. 2. Mandatory Entrepreneurship Education: Entrepreneurship should be a mandatory part of all educational curricula, with a focus on nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. 3. Supportive Ecosystem: Establish thousands of venture clubs, incubators, and accelerators in schools, colleges, and districts to support budding entrepreneurs. 4. Competitions and Challenges: Organize competitions to inspire and develop entrepreneurial talent, creating a large pool of young entrepreneurs who can turn problems into business opportunities. Bizstart is proud to work with educational institutions, communities, and the government to drive this mission forward and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs. #YouthUnemployment #Entrepreneurship #EducationReform #JobMarket #India #Startups #bizstart #YouthEmpowerment #FutureOfWork #Bizstart #Innovation #RaviVenkatesan #highereducation University Grants Commission (UGC)

Alakh Pandey, the founder and CEO of Physics Wallah (PW), has gained recognition as one of India's top young entrepreneurs, as highlighted in the Hurun List of under-35 performers. At the age of 32, he leads a prestigious edtech company based in Noida, which is valued at over Rs 9,100 crore (around $1.1 billion). His journey from humble beginnings in Uttar Pradesh to establishing a billion-dollar educational platform is both remarkable and inspiring. Despite being a prominent figure in the Indian edtech landscape, the title of the richest teacher in India is often attributed to him, although conclusive data supporting this assertion remains absent. Pandey plays a significant role in helping students prepare for competitive exams such as the UPSC, CAT, and IIT-JEE. His story serves as an example for many unsuccessful candidates, demonstrating that perseverance and determination can lead to success despite challenges. Little known is Pandey's early ambition to become an actor, which he pursued through local dramas. Financial hardships forced his family to make sacrifices for his education, including selling their home to support him and his sister. Achieving exceptional academic performance, he scored 91 percent in Class 10 and 93.5 percent in Class 12. His teaching career began at the age of 22 in his hometown, where he initially earned a monthly salary of Rs 5,000. Pandey’s journey faced setbacks, including his failure to clear the IIT entrance exam; however, he completed his education at Harcourt Butler Technical Institute. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he began posting educational videos on YouTube from a small room, which ultimately led to the creation of Physics Wallah. His company has grown substantially, employing over 500 teachers and 100 technical staff, and boasting over 100 million YouTube subscribers. With an estimated net worth exceeding Rs 2,000 crore, Pandey exemplifies the transformative impact of resilience and hard work. He has not only amassed significant wealth but has also dedicated himself to aiding countless students in achieving their educational aspirations.
