More sustainability at GEALAN 💚 Sustainable business is based on three pillars:  - People 👨👩👧👦 - Planet 🌍  - Profit 💰 Balancing all three aspects is a complex challenge. In the future, a newly founded sustainability team in our company will be dedicated to this. GEALAN has been committed to the environment for around 30 years and actively conserves resources.  But the goal pursued by Dr. Michel Sieffert, Florian Rayhrer, Vera Lahme and Emre Karakoc (from left) goes far beyond that. 🎯 Together, they are working on a holistic approach to sustainability at GEALAN.  This means that across locations and in all business areas, the aspect of sustainability will be taken into account in every decision in the future. 🌱  The team is working on this by combining its expertise from different fields. Sustainability in Dutch IT: More Than Just a Buzzword In today’s world, sustainability is no longer a nice-to-have—it's a must. For Dutch IT companies, this means taking proactive steps to reduce environmental impact while driving innovation. From green data centers powered by renewable energy to energy-efficient software solutions, the Dutch IT industry is leading the charge toward a more sustainable future. But what does sustainability look like in practice? It’s about designing systems that minimize energy consumption, adopting circular economy principles, and continually innovating to reduce our carbon footprint. As we move forward, it’s clear that sustainable IT is not just about technology—it’s about responsibility. Let’s explore the initiatives that are making a real difference in the Netherlands. Last week, while on holiday in stunning and green Galicia, Spain, I came across an exciting event: "Beyond the Conference," an open public forum connected to the 10th International Degrowth Conference, happening in #Pontevedra. It was inspiring, and at the same time reassuring, to witness growth in the awareness of Earth's ecological boundaries and the importance of social justice in building a sustainable future for all. The urgency for action resonated further with the closing "Protestival" where passionate academics and activists shared powerful manifestos for #Degrowth, reminding us of our collective responsibility. Then, this week, we woke up with great news of Schneider Electric being named the most sustainable company by TIME among the world's largest and most influential companies. While true sustainability requires a huge systemic transformation and there is no such thing as "most sustainable" (as our planet is in ecological overshoot), this recognition highlights our company's commitment to #decarbonization and environmental impact reduction beyond our own operations. Indeed, it is our everyday job at Schneider Electric Sustainability Business to help our customers minimize their environmental impact across their entire processes and supply chains, supporting them on their decarbonization journey. While most large corporations may not be the ultimate model in a post-growth economy, Schneider Electric's expertise and dedication in #Sustainability, #Efficiency, and #Digitalization, answers the strong societal need for #Electrification, #Renewables, and #EnergyAccess for all. This, together with the growing scientific research and consensus for a Degrowth Economy, gives me more hope for a future where sustainability is more of a collective effort in the hands of all of us.

Iceland’s Sustainable Innovation: A Blueprint for Global Action Recently, I had the privilege to visit Iceland – a land of breathtaking natural beauty and profound innovation. But beyond its captivating landscapes lies a more important story: Iceland stands as a living laboratory of sustainable practices, where research, cutting-edge technology, and forward-thinking policies converge to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the fight against climate change. In an era where the world is desperately seeking models for sustainable development, Iceland is more than a case study—it’s a global call to action. As someone deeply committed to advancing sustainability and innovation, and with an eye toward the critical work of the United Nations in shaping global policy, I believe Iceland’s example holds transformative lessons for the UN’s sustainability agenda. This blog is my call to researchers, policymakers, and innovators at the UN, let’s harness Iceland’s blueprint to accelerate global progress toward climate resilience. 1. Sustainability as a Living Practice: Iceland’s Geothermal Revolution Iceland is often celebrated for its geothermal energy, which provides 25% of the country’s electricity and 90% of its heating. But the true brilliance lies in how Iceland maximizes every drop of geothermal energy, demonstrating that sustainability is more than a technical solution—it’s a mindset. At the Hellisheiði Power Plant, geothermal energy is used at cascading temperatures—200°C for electricity, then 130°C for industrial uses, 100°C for aquaculture, and finally 40°C for snow melting on city sidewalks. This cascading model isn't just about energy efficiency—it’s about rethinking how we use resources to create entire ecosystems of circular economies. Imagine the UN taking this concept and scaling it globally, creating sustainable industries in emerging economies and transforming urban infrastructures worldwide.
