Learning and reflection from my first-year CEO journey What does being a startup CEO mean when you're leading a team of 5? The answer is: everything - including writing prototype code! For the past year, I've rotated between product manager, marketer, sales, PR, customer success, and of course, data scientist who defines and tracks growth metrics. Through all these hats I've worn, here are some things I've learned and, honestly, "things I could have done better." 1) Building a consumer-facing vertical AI application, investing time in building an engaging community around your brand is at least, if not more important than endlessly perfecting your product quality and short-term acquisition. Consumer trust takes time to build and they will only buy if they have sufficient trust to you and your business. The best time to build your community? Yesterday. 2)Just because you could create almost any AI app in a minute doesn't mean users will care. What matters is what keeps users coming back to you once trying it once. Everything else is just shiny tech looking for a purpose. 3) The content piece was a real eye-opener for me: Working with (micro) influencers turned out to be way more authentic than trying to create everything in-house or letting AI do the heavy lifting. As each of us enter the final sprint as we wrap up 2024, I wanted to thank everyone of my network old, new, near and far for an unprecedented year.
