Significant progress is on the horizon for the SEMPRE-BIO PROJECT in 2024. In SEMPRE-BIO PROJECT, our aim is to reduce our dependence on non-renewable energy sources. As previously explained in our blog (https://lnkd.in/ddzXh4Rj ) about our Case Study 3, SEMPRE-BIO is dedicated to advancing biogas upgrading technologies. However, in CS3 (Belgium), our efforts go beyond producing Bio-LNG and liquid-CO2. We are also exploring innovative ways to convert CO2 into valuable materials, including biopolymers, biochemicals, and alternative protein sources. Throughout this year, we will be designing and constructing two distinct technological solutions. The first is a hybrid fermenter, a system that transforms organic material into valuable products. The second is a solar photobioreactor, an advanced system utilizing sunlight to grow microorganisms, which can also convert CO2 into useful substances. By spring, our 50L hybrid fermenter pilot, managed by BETA Technological Center is expected to be fully operational. We are aiming for a steady production of biopolymers and biochemicals by the end of the year. Simultaneously, we are setting up a pilot-scale microalgae cultivation. This involves cultivating algae using residual materials (digestate) and recovered CO2 from the CS3. A 600L solar photobioreactor will be operated semi-continuously in Spain, led by BETA-UVIC, while a conventional photobioreactor will be operated in Belgium, close to Adinkerke, by Ghent University and Innolab. Furthermore, we will be validating and demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of producing marketable bio-CO2 products, obtaining optimal results by the end of the year.
