#Urban #streets have always served as dynamic hubs of activity, evolving over time to meet the diverse needs of city dwellers. From bustling transportation routes to vibrant social spaces, streets have played a crucial role in shaping the fabric of our cities. In the early twentieth century, streets were not only thoroughfares but also served as communal gathering spots, where neighbors socialized and children played alongside vendors and markets. However, this diverse mix of activities posed challenges for safety, sanitation, and mobility. In response, reformers initiated changes in #streetdesign and #zoning, focusing on improving safety, sanitation, and mobility while promoting economic growth. Over time, #street #design evolved to prioritize motor vehicle movement, leading to unsustainable development patterns and environmental degradation. In recent years, there has been a shift towards more balanced street design, emphasizing transportation, #community, and environmental goals. Investment in high-quality street #infrastructure has shown to yield benefits beyond mobility, including improved public health and economic prosperity. The Street Design #Manual draws on global innovation in street design, materials, and lighting, serving as a flexible guide for creating vibrant and sustainable urban environments. Its continued development ensures that cities like New York remain at the forefront of urban innovation, fostering a greener and more prosperous future. #SDGs #geometry #furniture #urbanplanning #sustainability More Contents: Woongsik Dr. Su, MBA

Pedestrians need networks for movement, a key feature of people-centric cities. This system and dynamic in civic spaces boosts foot traffic and helps bolster local economies. Always a big consideration in the work we do at Benoy whatever the project. ‘With escalating land values in urban centers, there has been a growing trend to float public spaces from ground level to elevated locations, such as rooftops or podiums between buildings. From a development perspective, maximizing floor area has become crucial as urban environments expand. Ground-level spaces are highly sought after for retail use due to their strategic location, which attracts foot traffic and potential customers and drives city development and economics.’ #landscapearchitecture #landscapedesign #landscapeinfrastructure #footfall #urbandesign #pedestrianisation https://lnkd.in/eyXr5nuh

While writing the new edition of The JOY Experiments, Scott Higgins and I had discussion about the name "the 15-minute city". We didn't like it because it used the language of efficiency - and a devotion to efficiency is what makes our cities so cold and segregated. Well that tiny discussion has led to this article. Don't get me wrong - I love the idea of smaller sub communities, I just don't think it should be about measuring distances and conveniences. Also a shout out to Ashleigh Crofts who is mentioned in this article and my partner in a 3rd place finish in a global 15-minute city design competition. #joyexperiments #citybuilding #15minutecity #urbanplanning #societalchange #urbandesign

#AnecdoteOfTheWeek Walkability acts as a pivotal factor in the design of commercial and residential complexes. A walkable environment is more than just a pedestrian-friendly street; it's a catalyst for thriving communities, economic growth, and enhanced property values. From personal experience, I've witnessed the transformative power of walkable neighbourhoods. Living in a complex where I could easily stroll to shops, restaurants, and parks elevated my overall living experience. It fostered a stronger sense of community, encouraged a healthier lifestyle, and even saved me money on transportation costs. When designing commercial and residential complexes, developers must prioritize walkability. Integrating mixed-use spaces, creating inviting pedestrian pathways, and incorporating ample green areas are essential to developing thriving, sustainable communities. By doing so, they not only enhance the appeal of their projects but also contribute to the long-term sustainability and vibrancy of the surrounding area. Let's foster a dialogue on the importance of walkability in real estate development. Take a quick look at what HayDrews & Co. Global Consulting posted Across Midtown, new ordinance aims to boost street-level vibrancy In Midtown Atlanta, Special Public Interest Zoning (SPI-16) is looking forward to enhancing the street-level experience for residents and tourists by making it more “vibrant” and “tech-savvy”. These changes consist of parking decks matching the vibe of its neighboring building, active uses to avoid vacancy, outdoor dining, and other amenities. This project would be very beneficial to the city of Atlanta as it is a great addition to its overall city structure as it improves urban design, giving the city more of an identity, and would potentially increase its number or tourists. https://lnkd.in/e9g5XzkN Across Midtown, new ordinance aims to boost street-level vibrancy atlanta.urbanize.city
