I am thrilled to announce that, I and my colleagues have successfully secured funding from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to implement a project on evaluating Precision Livestock Farming Technologies in Africa. This project aims to enhance the application of emerging technologies and AI in livestock farming to improve productivity. The project is a collaboration between The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) and the University of Florida in the United States. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has been involved in this, but above all I want to thank God for this incredible opportunity, which opens new doors of responsibility and learning. With his grace, I believe we will achieve remarkable success. This project offers an exceptional chance for livestock farmers, particularly small dairy farmers and pastoralists, to enhance their farm productivity using advanced smart technologies. We will employ two leading technologies: the SmaXtec bolus and the Ceres tag. Here are some key benefits these tools will provide: 1. Track Animal Behaviors: These technologies monitor all animal movements, including eating, walking, and resting, and provide daily reports to farmers. 2. Monitor Animal Health: They can detect signs of illness or heat in animals and send alerts to a farmer. 3. Monitor Animal Feeding: They estimate the amount of feed consumed by the animals and predict milk production. 4. Detect Methane Production: They measure the amount of methane gas emitted by the animals, helping to manage environmental impact. Additionally, we will establish a Precision Livestock Farming Hub at Nelson Mandela-AIST. This hub will serve as a knowledge center and a living lab where farmers can learn, receive training, and get farm assessment services. This is an important milestone for us as we expand our technology to benefit a broader range of animals and farmers. 🔬 Why Sheep? 1️⃣ Diverse Livestock: Sheep are raised for various purposes, including meat, milk, and wool, making them a significant part of the livestock industry. 2️⃣ Special Requirements: Sheep have unique physiological and behavioral characteristics that present different challenges and opportunities for monitoring. 3️⃣ Sustainability: Efficient sheep farming can contribute to more sustainable agriculture and food systems. 🛠 What Are We Testing?
