TERRIFIC NEWS for the industry! With this move Sony Pictures takes control of two of the most neglected Ps of movie marketing: Price and Place. Exhibition has gotten pricing wrong for years, with the cost of a movie ticket outpacing inflation by a staggering amount over the past 25 years, corresponding with an ever-smaller audience. (See link in comments below.) And they've also struggled to make the experience clean and comfortable as well, which erodes value. Oh, and one of the other Ps is greatly improved by this as well: People. Marketing attribution and efficiency can be greatly improved by this. For those who think this will lead to anti-competitive outcomes, that would be a good (and easy) problem to solve if it were to come to that again, but right now the business needs a shakeup like this, and the investment it comes with. #sony #sonypictures #alamodrafthouse #movies

Happy John Lewis Christmas Ad Day to all who celebrate. Slick, flashy, impressive, but no feels for me - left me a tad cold. This is still my favourite JLP ad - for Waitrose…. - It does emotion (in spades) - Is properly wholesome - Lovey pacing / cinematography - Clear narrative with good payoff - Doesn’t feel like everyone lives in a 3.5m London townhouse But most of all, it all ties back beautifully to what makes JLP different - its partners. And if you can get people to feel emotion for a supermarket, you’ve cracked it! Every bit of research right now will show you people really value authenticity, brand values that align with their own, and companies who have a social purpose. I really don’t understand why JLP don’t lean more into their own unique USP on the high street. #johnlewis #JLP #waitrose #advertising #marketing #tv

This is how you turn online hype into real-world excitement! Since 1984, Criterion have been setting the standard for how movies are released on home video — from VHS to DVD to Blu-Ray — and they’ve built up a catalogue of over 1,000 films in their collection. For about a decade, they’ve been inviting some of the world’s most famous directors, actors, and producers into the ‘Criterion Closet’, recording them picking out their favourite movies from the collection and sharing the videos online. The ‘Closet Picks’ videos have become especially popular in recent years, often getting millions of views. So, this year, Criterion loaded their closet into a truck and took it on the road! Touring it around large cities and major film festivals. The pop-up created hours-long queues wherever it went, with film fans eager to buy some new movies and get a photo of themselves stood in the Criterion Closet like their favourite filmmakers and actors had before them.
