Medical extended reality represents a transformative intersection of healthcare and immersive technologies. MXR encompasses virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and other tech that extends or upgrades the medical experience. The roots of #MXR trace back over 40 years to early experiments with VR for psychological therapies and simulation training. Over time, as the technology advanced, MXR applications broadened, eventually gaining recognition from regulatory bodies like the FDA, marking an important milestone in the field and paving the way for integration into healthcare practices. MXR is now attracting more interest, exploration, and research, demonstrating year-over-year growth. Despite MXR's maturity beyond a nascent field, there remains a notable absence of a centralized taxonomy to categorize the diverse array of research and application areas within this domain. A well-structured taxonomy is important for facilitating clear communication and classification among different MXR participants. The American Medical Extended Reality Association (AMXRA), in partnership with the editorial board of the Journal of Medical Extended Reality, developed a novel taxonomy to help define the field of MXR. Developed by experts in the field, this taxonomy aims to standardize terminology, categorize existing work, and provide a framework for future research and development within this dynamic and rapidly evolving field. #medicalextendedreality #digitalhealth #AI #VR #AR #MR #taxonomy https://lnkd.in/gpTTpzmh

Most of the people are visual people. We need to see things to believe in how a change can become reality! #Virtualreality (VR) is making huge strides and tackling healthcare problems in innovative ways. Virtual reality = Training our minds in envisioning things that may or may not ever existed! Let’s explore some real-world examples where VR is making a difference: Rendever: In senior living communities, Rendever uses VR to create immersive experiences for residents. It allows them to virtually explore places they may not physically visit, fostering a sense of connection, excitement, and reducing feelings of isolation. Stanford Chariot Program VR•XR•AI: Tailoring games to the interests of a younger audience, the CHARIOT Program demonstrates how VR can engage patients and enhance their experience during medical treatments. MindMaze: Focusing on human-machine interfaces, MindMaze employs VR to aid in rehabilitation and cognitive therapy. It helps patients regain motor skills and cognitive function after injuries or strokes. Osso VR: Specializing in surgical training, OSSO VR provides realistic simulations for surgeons. It allows them to practice procedures, refine techniques, and improve patient outcomes. These examples highlight the potential of VR in healthcare, from training medical professionals to enhancing patient care and rehabilitation. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more innovative applications in the future. Who says healthcare need only involve a prescription or scalpel? I am fascinated by the rapid evolution of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in healthcare. 🚀 The pace at which the two technologies are advancing mirrors the explosive growth in the consumer sector as evidenced by the increasing number of advertisements we’re seeing. However, while we often use the terms AR and VR interchangeably, it's crucial to distinguish between the two. 🔍 AR adds a layer of digital insight to the real world, offering real-time assistance in surgeries, medical education, and patient rehabilitation. It's about augmenting reality, not replacing it. Conversely, VR immerses the user entirely in a virtual world, proving invaluable in pain management, mental health therapies, and complex surgical planning. 🌟 With the renewed focus on mental health disorders and treatment, I am particularly bullish on its potential here. The level of immersion found in VR enables healthcare professionals and patients to experience and interact with scenarios in ways previously unimaginable. 👉 AR and VR are here, the technology is improving daily, the use cases are increasing, and both healthcare personnel and patients alike will benefit from the rapid advances we’re witnessing. #HealthcareOnLinkedIn #AugmentedReality #VirtualReality #HealthcareInnovation

Real world to VR: seamless and natural or a trend? Since the early days of VR, I’ve been a huge fan - not only because of the technological advances but also because of VR’s potential to help companies "do more with less." Firefighters - Imagine training firefighters with a VR scenario for "assessing a burning building." This approach prepares new firefighters for real-life situations without putting them at risk. This is a fantastic use case! Surgeons - VR could simulate critical scenarios during surgery, allowing surgeons to practice acute management skills without the actual risk. Another great application! However, spending thousands of hours in VR performing surgeries, where hand-eye coordination is crucial, can lead to motor skills that may not fully transfer to real surgery. And that’s a challenge, because how well does precision translate from real world to VR? Three researchers set out to explore the difference in hand-eye coordination between VR and the real world. By pairing eye tracking with body movement analysis, they discovered that the gap is larger than we initially thought (full study in the comments). Personally, I believe VR has immense potential that’s still underutilized. Here are a few areas where I think VR could play a significant role: • Emergency services (police, firefighters, EMTs) • Maintenance engineering across various fields • Marketing (e.g., exhibitions, attention assessment) • Sports training and performance analysis Lee G. Waters MSc, SFHEA & Peter Kärrlander If we take VR beyond its "traditional" scope of gaming and entertainment, where else do you think VR could make a real difference? #VR #Research #EyeTracking #PredictiveMaintenance #Education #VirtualReality #XR #Futureofwork #Digitaltransformation #TechForGood #workplacesafety #Innovation #VRtraining #Simulation
