After the atrocities performed by doctors during the Second World War in human experimentation and clinical research, the world was deeply shaken. The reaction was that representatives from several countries met in Helsinki, capital of Finland, through a World Medical Association (WMA) to put ethical limits in health care in writing. Thus was born the Declaration of Helsinki in 1964, with universal principles that now guide researchers, ethics committees and governments around the world in their decisions. The Declaration's operating principles include careful assessment of risks and benefits, the likelihood of benefit to the population studied, and conduct by expert investigators. And to ensure that it continues to fulfil its purpose, the WMA invites periodic reviews of the document. The last one was in 2013 and it will be reviewed again this year. In order to make the process collaborative, transparent and inclusive, a multinational working group was chosen and has two years to meet, discuss, ask for feedback and finally update it. The second public comment period is open today (3-24 June) on the working group's proposed edits. If you want to know more details and even participate in the process, the WMA has forms and emails here: https://lnkd.in/eP-9Jmat #Helsinki #ethics #WMA #clinicaltrial #clinicalresearch #BOPALcro #CRO

Swiss Days (Day 1): Tashkent, Uzbekistan The MESCA Foundation's mission to improve the quality of and access to #healthcare for the citizens of #CentralAsia. This #foundation is supported by 4 pillars: #education & #training, #access to #technology, #outreach and #research. Since research is fundamental to help MESCA achieve it's #mission, I requested support from the governmental sector to help make the ethical committee pathway more transparent. #Uzbekistan has the potential of conducting high impact research, but the process is not an easy one to navigate. Being a panelist at the Health: Innovation, Quality and Trust Symposium at the annual #swissdays congress, I wanted to take the opportunity to be heard of this great need. The concept is if we can make the process to submit for #clinicaltrials in Uzbekistan a lot easier, then the possibility of entering the international stage to support the advancement of #medicine is greater. To support the mission of MESCA, I feel it is the foundation's responsibility to develop a systematic approach to allow research to be conducted in Uzbekistan.
