Core human rights instruments contain no temporal limitation to the enjoyment of human rights. There is a growing recognition that a “business as usual” approach is exposing the Earth, present generations (particularly children and youth), as well as future generations to mounting crises. Yet, international governance remains often driven by short-term priorities to the detriment of intragenerational and intergenerational equity. Today at 2pm CEST, uring the ongoing 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council, join us, FIAN International and United Nations Human Rights Special Procedures, for a side event on the legal norms related to the human rights of future generations and opportunities to better protect their human rights, including with regard to the Maastricht Principles and the UN Declaration on Future Generations. Today is International Human Rights Day, commemorating the anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR sets out inalienable and fundamental human rights for all.  This year's theme is: Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.    “...a call to acknowledge the importance and relevance of human rights in our everyday lives. We have an opportunity to change perceptions by speaking up against hate speech, correcting misinformation and countering disinformation. This is the time to mobilize action to reinvigorate a global movement for human rights” (United Nations)   👉 Human Rights remain at the heart of the ECLC’s mission.  🌏 Today on International Human Rights Day, the Centre is reflecting on the vital importance of standing up for human rights, everyday. Whether it be through the Centres’s work in addressing structural and systemic racism, providing legal help to victim-survivors of gender-based violence and elder abuse or advocating for climate justice – the Centre will continue its mission to advocate for and promote understanding and engagement with human rights each and everyday.
