Confirmation and straight off the Dailies today: (although they are saying it’s all for the interest of the audience, it’s a lot cheaper but that is going to change I guarantee, I’ve worked with international companies and although it is more expensive, supplies, unions etc, it is going to change for international crews you already see some of the complaints online: 🎬🌍Netflix's Global Gamble: Netflix is earmarking a staggering $7.9B of its $15.4B budget for productions outside of North America. This shift not only marks the first time the streaming giant invests more in international content than in its domestic market but also points to a broader industry pivot towards embracing a global TV landscape. With the decline of the so-called peak TV era, companies are exploring new territories to captivate audiences worldwide. This shift is happening as the TV industry starts to move away from the overflow of shows we've had in recent years, focusing more on content that can reach global audiences. Reasons? Making shows outside the U.S. can be cheaper, and American audiences are getting more into shows from other countries (think shows like ‘Squid Game’ and ‘Money Heist’). Plus, with the U.S. market for streaming services getting pretty crowded, Netflix sees a chance to grow by getting more subscribers from other parts of the world. It's a smart move that could lead to a lot more interesting and diverse shows for everyone to watch

Generally I think @ryanpbroderick Garbage Day is required reading. Here is a guest post that is especially germane to "our" discourse. No One Wants To Admit That Streaming TV Is Just Marketing —by Adam Bumas The record-breaking winner at the Emmys last night was Shōgun, which has been so successful that Hulu is making two more seasons despite the fact they’ve run out of book to adapt. Luckily, this has famously never ever been a problem for big period shows before. But after doing so well with both audiences and critics it’s a pretty understandable move. Although, that brings us to a curiously complicated question. How do you measure a streaming show’s success? You’d think that would be easy to answer, considering almost $250 billion will go into making them this year. But none of the traditional metrics paint a favorable picture. Thanks to last year’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, streamers now have to share some viewing data. But like a lot of actually meaningful data, the biggest takeaway is how little we really know. Viewing numbers can only be so important when everything is on the same level — a level that pits dozens of pricey original shows against Suits and The Office. And new signups aren’t worth much when they’re so easy-come-easy-go.

Netflix has announced a new future which could completely change the way we discuss our favorite shows. With the new moments feature, fans will be able to easily share their favorite scenes from film and television offerings on Netflix. The feature integrates with mobile devices to allow viewers to share moments with their friends or to social media with a few quick button presses. As Netflix continues to try to stay ahead of other streamers by improving this platform, this is an interesting move. Streamers and content owners have long sought to prevent screen recording and screenshots on their platforms, and this new feature is a major swing in the opposite direction. Despite that, one can easily see why Netflix added the feature. With social media being a major tool for drawing attention to their content, this feature could create a surge of user-generated free promotion for their titles. As other streamers look to close the gap between their platforms and Netflix in terms of subscribers and viewership, it'd come as little surprise if they attempted to mimic this move. This also serves as a way to combat the ease of sharing on internet platforms like YouTube, which continue to compete with streamers for viewership from younger audiences. I'll be interested to see what Netflix show will be next to have its viral moment on social media, with sharing clips now made easier than ever. Colin Connolly Esquire Group Inc.

Over the last several years, Apple has spent more than $20B on original TV shows and movies that critics love and few viewers have seen. A number of people refer to Apple as the 'new HBO.' While one could make this case creatively -- not my area of expertise -- this overlooks that HBO has produced many massive hits. Apple has not. It's early. HBO didn't even fund big scripted programs until 20 years in. But Apple knows it needs to be making a bigger splash. TV+ accounts for just 0.2% of US TV viewing. Some blame the marketing, or lack thereof. Some blame the lack of a library (changing soon?). Others say Apple has gone over budget on a lot of things that don't seem to interest many people. The company is starting to closely examine its spending and hoping to push back on its reputation in Hollywood. (Some call it the 'Apple tax.')
