Jeremy Williams’ Post

Head of Climate LLC, Digital Farming and Commercial Ecosystems, Bayer Crop Science

Dan’s reflections got me thinking about a story I heard a few months ago. Someone asked Dan Kurdys, MBA (below) about our work training generative AI models to accurately respond to very specific questions about agronomy and agricultural products. They were comparing off-the-shelf models like ChatGPT to incredibly smart (and I suppose infinitely resourceful) teenagers. This person asked if we are "sending those teenagers to college." Dan replied, "Even better ... we're sending them to the farm." So starting with Microsoft Cloud, its embedded AI capabilities, publicly available agricultural data, and select proprietary data, we "sent the model to the farm," so to speak. We fed it volumes of crop protection labels and safety data sheets, and we trained the model on thousands of real-world questions about Bayer's crop protection products to make sure it understands the many questions crop advisors might receive from farmers. The result is what's being discussed onstage this week at #MSIgnite in Chicago. It's already making headlines (check comments) and I especially look forward to seeing how these types of advancements will uplift the ag industry, the broader agrifood sector, and enable all of us to better serve farmers around the world. Congratulations to the teams at Bayer and Microsoft who brought our first adapted AI model to market! #MSIgnite #AgInnovation #AI #genai

Here in Chicago for #MSIgnite and looking forward to sharing our adapted #AI model for agriculture. Our first is called E.L.Y. Crop Protection and I will share how it advanced through Bayer’s partnership with Microsoft. Off-the-shelf LLMs perform many tasks well, but to be a relaible technology companion to those who serve farmers, the models must be adapted and specialized for the ag domain. With thousands of crop protection options available, advisors working with farmers must be able to make informed recommendations that protect crops while ensuring environmental sustainability. Mainstream LLMs don’t cut it. We need Adapted AI models specialized for agriculture and vetted by experts. I am here to launch this model and invite others to join us in the mission to improve access to applied agronomy expertise and build with us! #GENAI4AG

Sending AI to the farm – what an incredible analogy and approach! Exciting to see how Jeremy and the teams at Bayer and Microsoft are redefining ag innovation with specialized AI models. These advancements have the potential to truly transform how we support farmers and the agrifood sector globally. Congratulations to everyone making this vision a reality!
