Today, on the Day of Reconciliation, we reflect on the importance of unity and healing in South Africa. This public holiday, celebrated annually on December 16th, was established in 1995 to foster reconciliation and national unity following the end of apartheid. The date is significant as it marks both the Battle of Blood River in 1838 and the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961, symbolizing a shared history and a commitment to a harmonious future. Getting involved is simple: participate in local events, educate yourself on South Africa's history, and engage in conversations about reconciliation and social cohesion. By doing so, you contribute to building a more inclusive and united society. #ReconciliationDay #Unity #Healing #SouthAfrica #History #SocialCohesion #NationalUnity #DayOfReconciliation

South Africa was NOT on my mind when I celebrated my 19th birthday, yet about 9,000 miles away, the country was holding its first democratic election. Awareness and Acceptance are not just foundational to self-mastery, but also foundational to the greater understanding and healing. At 19, I had no awareness of the historic events and fall of apartheid. At 25, I met my first person from South Africa at an International Residence Hall I applied to live in as to broaden my world view. At 49, Alex Ihama invited me to “The Future of EDI & Anti-Racism Programs”, which resulted in me chasing curiosities that brought me to the current situation in South Africa. This was only possible, I think, because of positive changes in diversity within my LinkedIn network. Without diversity, awareness is unlikely. Without awareness, acceptance is impossible. Accepting truths that were previously invisible to me. “South Africa still grapples with its legacy. Unequal access to education, unequal pay, segregated communities and massive economic disparities persists, much of it is reinforced by existing institutions and attitudes.” (UN Report, Africa renewal). Accepting we all can play a role, no matter how small we think that might be. “Dismantling such entrenched racist and discriminatory systems requires commitment, leadership, dialogue and advocacy…” (Abigail Noko, Representative for UN Human Rights Regional Office of Southern Africa). We can unlearn rules that no longer serve us. We can broaden our perspectives. We can do better. #diversity #mindset #perspective #awareness P.S. - Picture from 1989

Post-conflict reconstruction and development must be gender-sensitive, addressing the specific needs of women and children, as emphasized in Pillar Four of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Resolution 1325 (2000). This pillar highlights the importance of ensuring women’s participation and protection in recovery efforts, promoting their access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. By integrating gender equity into rehabilitation initiatives, we can build sustainable peace and inclusive development that leaves no one behind. #WomenPeaceAndSecurity #GenderEquity #PostConflictReconstruction
