“Centrica knocks on Wood’s door for #hydrogenstorage project in North Sea” June 26, 2024, - Aida Čučuk “Engineering and consulting company Wood has been awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract by energy company Centrica Energy Storage (CES) for the redevelopment of the UK’s Rough field in readiness for future hydrogen storage.” “The contract entails new #pipelines , a new unmanned installation, as well as #onshoreinjectionfacilities at the Easington #gasterminal . Wood claimed that this is the first step in making the field #hydrogenready .” “To note, the Rough reservoir, located in the Southern North Sea, has been used to store #naturalgas for over 30 years, and as per Wood, has the potential to provide over half of the UK’s hydrogen storage requirements.” “Centrica recently announced the company’s ambition for the Rough field to become the largest #longdurationhydrogenstorage facility in the world, however, a final investment decision (FID) for the redevelopment project is still dependent on a government support model that would underpin #gasstorage investment in the UK.” https://lnkd.in/ei8qmETH? 📋Tracking The Value of Innovation🚀 In addition to the work our Innovation Team does to identify, explore and implement improvements on the current and future gas network, they also have to understand how successful previous innovative solutions have been once implemented. Not only is this an Ofgem requirement, but it also provides an insight into the types of innovation projects that are having the most impact on the network. Every year, the Operational Innovation team conduct value tracking of implemented innovation projects, to record the benefits realised. These can be financial, such as cost avoidance or an improvement of efficiency, or environmental, where the team will estimate emissions savings as a direct or indirect consequence of the project. To date, we have identified a value of £89million from our RIIO-1 Innovation Projects. One such example is the L555 Dent Tolerance Project, which carried out comprehensive testing to understand the tolerance levels of dents on L555 pipelines. As a result, a number of policies were updated which increased the tolerances for dents and improved the understanding of the resultant damage to welds. Prior to this work, remedial action would have taken place on lower-level dents, at an unnecessary cost of approximately £200,000 per excavation. Now, dents can be confidently assessed, and rectification is only carried out in scenarios where it is required. It is estimated that this single project gave a total cost avoidance of £4.6million by the end of the last financial year. In addition to the financial benefits, the reduced number of excavations leads to a reduced risk of service disruption and also reduced environmental impacts. You can read more about this project, and other innovative projects that are currently benefitting the NTS below at our dedicate Value Tracking site below.👇 https://lnkd.in/eDFSgiPF Follow us on LinkedIn for more Innovation Team updates!💻 #InnovationWeekNG #InnovationTeam #hydrogen #engineering

Earthmovers editor, Graham Black, shares his thoughts on the future of the combustion engine within the construction industry: Battery-powered machinery is developing at a rapid rate, but that by no means heralds the beginning of the end of the internal combustion engine. However, they will be fuelled by something other than diesel, from hydro-treated vegetable oils (HVO) to hydrogen gas. It is extremely encouraging to learn that pioneering blue-chip contractors are beginning to install hydrogen refueling facilities on the first couple of their sites in the UK. This signals the start of a process that I believe will transform the carbon footprint of the industry. Not only do hydrogen-fueled engines emit zero emissions, but they are not much more complicated to maintain than an LPG car engine. The big plus point of this technology is that, in the grand scheme of things, the production costs can’t be that much different to a diesel engine. That is not to say that the recently introduced batch of 22-tonne class battery-powered excavators is not worthy of consideration, far from it. For a higher capital investment, they offer incredibly low total life operating and maintenance costs, which is an attractive proposition for many large businesses.

Pull testing is a method used to assess the strength and stability of the foundations or piles that support the solar panel structures. This test is crucial for ensuring that the ground-mounted system can withstand various forces such as wind loads, soil movement, and other environmental stresses. The process typically involves: ◦ Inserting Piles or Anchors: The vertical support structures, known as piles or anchors, are driven into the ground to form the foundation for the solar panel mounts. ◦ Applying a Controlled Load: A hydraulic puller or similar equipment is used to apply an upward or lateral force to the piles to simulate the forces the structure may experience in real conditions. ◦ Measuring Resistance: The force is gradually increased until the pile either reaches the specified load or moves beyond acceptable limits. The test measures how much load the pile can resist before it begins to displace or fail. ◦ Evaluating Results: The results help engineers determine whether the installed piles or anchors are strong enough for long-term stability or if adjustments need to be made to the depth, material, or installation method. Pull testing is essential for ensuring that solar panel installations are safe, secure, and compliant with engineering standards, especially in areas with high wind loads or challenging soil conditions. It helps prevent future structural failures and enhances the overall reliability of the solar installation. At Gridfit, we can have both the expertise and equipment to carry out pull testing for your next installation.
