Really cool to see how a brand reaches for glory. I remember back in mid-2000s being kind of weird to wear the Ohio dad sneaker, and now it seems the most stylish folks in Berlin, London or NYC are on NBs. A couple of thoughts how New Balance is nailing it: 1. I think NB has hit the stride with being retro and technological at the same time. They've always made high-quality kicks for runners and that heritage has plenty of tapping in to. 2. There is some consumer fatigue with existing giants in the sportswear market, brands like NB, On, Hoka are kind of winning by just not being Nike or Adidas. 3. NB is privately owned and it seems not being on the hook of shareholders in the stock market allows them to make more bold decisions, which in fashion is kind of important. Anyway, dad sneakers are cool and comfy to wear, I think the 10B mark is pretty doable!
Once-quiet New Balance says it's now ready to make some noise and join the category’s biggest players at the top table. The brand remains in double-digit growth mode, with sales up 13 percent in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period last year. Its expansion over the past five years — predicated on growing direct-to-consumer sales, courting the world's most exciting young athletes and building a formidable lifestyle sneaker category — has placed the 117-year-old company among the segment of older challenger brands like ASICS and Salomon, leveraging their dormant archive of old-school performance running and trail footwear to appeal to growing demand for “sportstyle” sneakers. Alongside newer challengers like On and HOKA, this collective has taken considerable market share from incumbents like Nike, Adidas and Puma, all of whom have had their struggles in recent years. With the Olympics getting underway, New Balance is bringing its big guns to Paris, too, in the form of its 85 sponsored athletes, including Coco Gauff and two-time Olympic track-and-field medalist Gabby Thomas, as well as its most prized sneaker collaborators, Joe Freshgoods and Teddy Santis. The 2 real problems that brands don't want to answer ? 1. Super Shoes don't help the majority of runners that use them. Is seeing Super Shoes "all the way throughout the pack" a good thing? The Alphafly 3 is designed to improve performance for a 2:00 marathon, not the average 4:30 marathoner. 2. Why all this talk about speed? Between Super Shoes and Super Trainers, not every run should be fast! PS. If all shoes are super, doesn't that make none of them super? Can we just call them shoes? https://lnkd.in/gRYhmZVn --- I’m the owner of The Directive Collective footwear design consultancy. We make great footwear, not just great sketches. #footweardesign #footweardesigner #running
Super shoes were made to break records. While these carbon-plated styles, which are paired with supercritical foam midsoles, landed on the scene almost a decade ago, the definitive tipping point came in 2019. That’s when Eliud Kipchoge, wearing the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next%, became the first person to run a marathon distance in less than two hours. Five years later, at a time when market watchers bemoan the lack of overall innovation in sneakers, the super shoe phenomenon is igniting the industry. And every major athletic player wants a piece of the action.

Adidas, three stripes seen around the world. Their Adizero-x-Allbrids collab, though, is groundbreaking - without breaking the planet. They’ve actually partnered up with the enemy on this one. Well, a competing shoe manufacturer at any rate. It’d kind of be like Maccas and HJ’s collaborating instead of suing each other… By crossing these unspoken lines Adidas and Allbirds have made a bold statement about the impact products like theirs have on the planet, and how important they think it is to change. They’ve also shown that you actually can have your cake and eat it too. Or rather, in this case, have a really stylish high-performance shoe and contribute less carbon to the climate crisis. Fine maybe that last part isn’t quite as snappy as the cake version, but it’s brilliant branding by Adidas. Why We Stan Adizero-x-Allbirds One of the largest sportswear manufacturers in the world taking an active stance on the C02 footprint of their product? The world needs it, and they’re doing it - it’s about time. They’ve admitted they need help - and they got it from the best. What They Did So Right • Allbrids specialises in eco-friendly products. Adidas does not. Together they’ve cornered both markets - performance is there, but the C02 is not. • They were honest. Many brands try to ignore their carbon footprint, Adidas stood up and claimed it - then showed how it can be better. #branding #design #creative #graphicdesign #creativeagency

Swiss sportswear brand On has introduced an innovative technology called LightSpray, which can 'spray' a high-performance, lightweight upper onto a shoe in just three minutes. This groundbreaking process results in a remarkably light running shoe, weighing only 170g for a men’s US8.5 size. For comparison, the Nike Alphafly 3 weighs 201g in the same size. The weight advantage of On's shoe comes from its sock-like upper, which weighs just 30g. The only supershoe lighter than this is the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1, at a mere 140g for unisex US8.5. While a slight reduction in weight might seem insignificant to the average runner, it can be crucial for elite athletes pushing the limits in long-distance running. This minor weight loss could mean the difference between winning and losing, or even setting a new world record. Hellen Obiri, the winner of the 2024 Boston Marathon, wore a development version of the shoe, hinting at its innovative design. Initially, it was assumed that the upper was a wrap concealing something novel, but it turns out the integrated upper itself is the major innovation. On hopes LightSpray will help them catch up to industry leaders like Nike and Adidas, who have a huge head-start on them in terms of size. While On’s sales were up 55% to $2 billion in 2023, it is still dwarfed by Nike ($51.2 billion) and Adidas’ ($23.2 billion) sales figures in 2023. Perhaps LightSpray’s ultra-light design can help level the playing field a bit.
