Good read from UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) It reminds me of the fact that despite numerous examples of the below case. Many of us as master planners and urban designers, continue to let road networks dominate our design processes when creating masterplans. We need to embrace a more daring approach. Just as living spaces were once reshaped into right-of-way-dominated, asphalt-heavy cities in the past century, we should consistently prioritize urban planning principles like Lefebvre’s "Right to the City" or Jacobs’ "Eyes on the Street" in our design mindset. This means reimagining future living environments with a focus on improved micro-mobility, access to public transport, gender equality, and equitable access to public spaces. We are responsible for shaping the future cities we are currently developing, and even a small meeting at our desk can pave the way for better, more livable spaces in the next 20 years.

'Investing in better roads or expanding the availability of electric vehicles are also popular policies. Yet Akenji says it will only encourage people to drive more. “We’re burden shifting, instead of solving the problem. The conclusion is we need far fewer cars on the road,” he says. Akenji instead proposes that cities use zoning – designing compact, live-play-work pedestrianised zones – to encourage people to walk, cycle or use the public transport. In converting roads and car parks to public spaces and gardens, luxury becomes available to the wider public, rather than in the hands of private individuals.' Urban nature, creating places for people. This is a great example of prioritising nature and beauty in an urban environment making it appealing for people also and encouraging biodiversity in an otherwise bland concrete jungle. #plantsforpeople #urbangreening #ecologicaldesign #urbannature #greytogreen #sustainablelandscapes #resilience #climatechangemitigation #landscapearchitecture

Seoul's Cheonggyecheon Stream restoration is an inspiring example of how urban spaces can be transformed to reconnect with nature, even in the middle of a bustling city! For over two decades, this river was hidden under concrete and an elevated freeway. Sure! the freeway made things convenient, but it could not make the impact this stream could make on people; it could not create a sense of space for them. But in 2003, the visionary leadership of Seoul's Mayor prioritized people over cars and started this remarkable project to restore the natural river. I first discovered this restoration project during my bachelor's in architecture, and it quickly became my topic of discussion in many professional settings. It was something I have proudly reflected on countless times, even though I had no direct role in its execution. This project is a perfect example of how integrating nature into urban planning can elevate the quality of life, contribute to better community connections, and create sustainable, vibrant cities. The Cheonggyecheon project was completed in 2005, adding pedestrian walkways, bike paths, and green spaces that in the present serve as popular areas for recreation and relaxation for both locals and tourists. 🌿 This is a reminder that no matter how busy our lives get, we must always strive to create spaces that allow our connection with nature. 👫🌳

🌟 The Ellinikon, a new district on the grounds of the former airport of Athens 🌟 Germany’s leading business newspaper Handelsblatt has a nice article today about what is probably Europe's largest urban development. As the article is in German language, let me summarize: This €9 billion urban development project by Lamda Development is transforming the former Athens airport into a smart, sustainable city. Ellinikon promises a 15-minute city concept, promoting walking and cycling. Once development is completed this new district will host 75,000 jobs and contribute 1.5% to the Greek GDP. Highlights include: 🌳 The largest coastal park in the Mediterranean 🏢 10,000 residential units, hotels, offices, and shopping centers 🏗 Riviera Tower, set to become the tallest building in Greece at 204 meters 🏫 Schools, sports facilities, a university campus, a clinic, and a marina In 2014, Lamda Development was awarded the contract for the development following a tender. "With Ellinikon, we are building a new city that puts Greece at the forefront of 'smart living', sustainability and innovation," says Odisseas Athanasiou, CEO of Lamda Development. This project is a significant leap towards Greece's modern, eco-friendly urban future! 🌍🚀 The overall concept and the Riviera Tower was designed by some of the world's largest architecture firms and star architects, including Foster + Partners, US architecture firm Sasaki, or Bjarke Ingels Group. At AFRY, we are extremely proud that we have been asked to develop the Technology Master Plan for the “The Ellinikon”, together with our partners from Delloitte, CIMA/CIGA, and Enomix. AFRY Management Consulting and AFRY engineers have analyzed infrastructure options with their CAPEX/OPEX and revenue potential, assessed operational aspects and how Digital Twins is best used in such an environment, as well as sustainability aspects of the Ellinikon. If you are interested to know more about Smart Cities and what AFRY can do for you in this area, please reach out to us. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Smart City Expo, and it was truly inspiring to see so many innovative ideas and solutions being presented. The discussions around urban sustainability and technology integration were thought-provoking, and it's clear that we are on the right path towards creating more livable cities. However, one aspect that stood out to me was the need for stronger emphasis on sustainable and smart materials in our urban development strategies. As we innovate and evolve, it's crucial that we prioritize eco-friendly materials that not only reduce our environmental footprint but also promote a healthier urban ecosystem. Future of smart cities lies in our ability to harmonize technology and sustainability. Let's push for a greater commitment to using sustainable materials and technologies in projects to build smart, resilient and sustainable constructions.

This panel is critical to addressing the clean energy transition as it highlights how to make the transition profitable! If you are serious about this, you should be here and join the conversation. How are you addressing retrofits to create value?
Who will be attending the Urban Land Institute's Asia Pacific Summit in Tokyo later this month?! GreenGen’s Brad Dockser will be joining Helen Amos from JLL Hong Kong, Albert Chan from Shui On Land, and Vram Malek from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to discuss the role of retroffiting existing buildings in achieving net zero goals, key barriers, and how owners can plan for retrofits that enhance building performance and overall asset value.
