Rather than giving a specific number right away, focus on highlighting the value you can bring to the company. If pressed for a figure, consider offering a range to demonstrate flexibility and openness to negotiation. Remember, ensure that the minimum of your range aligns with your comfort level. A thought: When asked the "What is your expected salary?" question on an interview, consider answering the question as if it had been asked this way: "What kind of compensation are you looking for?" Upon hearing your answer, if the interviewer comes back with “What is your expected salary” a second time, consider using the following as a foundation for an enthusiastic answer: “While I understand salary is important, I care more about the work, the company, my colleagues, and a potential total compensation package.” (Think about including specifics about what you like about the company and the job description in your answer,) If the interviewer comes back a third time with the very same question, consider that they are intent on trapping you into a number or a number range. Bear in mind that, for every company that operates this way, there are likely several others that are more concerned about hiring the right person for the right job and will negotiate in good faith rather than spending their time trapping and lowballing on salary. Just a thought... In an interview, why discussing the salary is not an option? Why when they ask about the expected salary, and actually after we measure the organization profile and set our values accordingly and say what we expect our salary to be, they decline us saying we are requesting a high salary... Why not just have a clear discussion that the salary range is from this amount and it can reach that amount. We are days away from 2025 and salary discussion is still not possible?

Recruiters speak to hundreds of people daily; we know the salary range of each industry and the salary range of any hierarchy. It's important that people should realize they are talking to a person who might have already spoken to their colleagues and even to individuals in similar roles and companies, knowing the salary range already. It's normal that candidates try to request more, and I can understand that. However, it's also important that the salary package should be realistic. Let me suggest this: tell your real salary to the recruiter and explain your expectations and why you are expecting this range. This will make the recruiter trust you. After all, honesty is a highly valued quality. #recruitmenttips

When to discuss salary expectations: before the interview or later? As the poll results show, there's no definitive answer. But let me share the guide questions I use to help clients: 1️⃣ Is salary your top consideration? If yes, clarify early. 2️⃣ What's your bargaining power? If strong, leverage for an early discussion. 3️⃣ Can I trust this employer to offer something within my desired range? If unsure, ask upfront. 4️⃣ Is the salary range narrowly defined? If not, discuss early. 5️⃣ Is the role clearly defined and/or standard in the industry? If not, clarify early. All said, it’s your right to have clear salary expectations. There should be no penalties for discussing these expectations upfront.
