🐢 Sea creatures... we took a half-term trip to see some sharks, the elusive octopus and a giant turtle. There were sharks as long as about five feet which in my mind, is big for an animal. And is as big as me, which arguably skews my sense of size.
👀 My little boy however, was convinced he'd see a super-sized, great white killing shark. And because he arrived with that expectation, he managed to walk through the entire experience without seeing anything at all. He was so fixated on finding what he wanted to see, that he blinkered himself from seeing all the other creatures. Even though we told him there wouldn't be an enormous great white, that was the one he wanted, and that is what he expects when he hears the word "shark" (although he is open to tiger sharks also, and sometimes a black-tipped reef shark... these were also absent)
🙈 He missed rays, turtles, sharks, the enormous fish at the bottom of this picture - didn't catch it's name. He didn't even enjoy and barely noticed, walking through the 360 tunnel surrounded by these creatures. In fact, the tunnel was his greatest hope of seeing "the shark" and was therefore his greatest disappointment of all.
All because what he wanted to see wasn't there.
➡ This is true when we look at meaningful engagement and co-production also. When we go in fixed on seeing something pre-defined, or working to a set-specific, when we enter the space 'already knowing' what we want to see or achieve, then we are at significant risk of missing the real learning and the real opportunity, and most of all, we at significant risk of overlooking crucial connections.
🌟 Every person matters. Every person brings value. Every person has a different set of experiences and strengths.
⏭ If we look just for the one shark we have only tunnel vision and we miss the diversity only the bigger picture brings.
🦈 Do you look for the shark? Or do you spot the seahorse..?
