It's the season of student arrivals, welcome events and course inductions - in the UK there are now c.2 million undergraduates studying each year. How will they be educated in sustainability and how are they shaping that learning? 🎓 There is some amazing practice out there - in stand-out courses designed with sustainability in mind - but still too often this practice is in the margins, not the core, or in obvious 'greener' subjects, but not touching all courses. So I'd like to share a huge thank you to The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education who are now hosting the online 'anti-greenwash education' toolkit as a legacy resource for the sector 💚 You may have spotted this before - its framework uses meaningful scaffolds to measure how sustainability is designed into courses. Developed with students and used by academics, it enables a full portfolio view of where sustainability learning is embedded. There are student-created videos and tips, to help students to use these scaffolds to influence their universities to go wider, faster and deeper on this. Equally interesting is the sector review from the student viewpoint. It looked at how universities talk about these commitments and what that sounds like to students who don't know the educational jargon around it. Their take on it is worth a read, for strategists, marketing teams and sustainability experts: 'What I discovered is how much ambiguity there is... how confusing it is as a student to come into that world without prior knowledge... I think curriculum greenwash is going to become more and more prevalent unless we put a stop to it" Students often cut to the chase and see this more clearly than we do - could you use that clarity to power up your sustainability learning this year? 💡 Thank you Kerr Castle Ailsa Crum Amy S. for empowering students to influence in this agenda and in so many aspects of higher education practice!
