As a hospitalist, I have serious concerns regarding the transformation of hospital purpose into profit generation versus provision of the best care possible. This drive for profit has turned ER's into through-put operations in which a multiplicity of tests is ordered up front, whether the patient actually needs them or not. Hospitalists now often focus on checking the boxes in the EMR rather than on whether or not they actually did what was in the boxes. Profits rise, patient safety issues abound. I struggle on a daily basis with ethics and integrity of care in a healthcare system that asks me to create profit based on the appearance of care. https://lnkd.in/gZ_RCnu5
