When I left Brazil to pursue a #PhD in Finance, I had a scholarship from a Brazilian grant agency. It was a time that all Brazilians, at least in #economics, would go abroad with Brazilian scholarships. Universities would gladly accept us not only for our merits, but also to finance other PhD candidates with the resources they would receive from our Brazilian scholarships. I'm also from the first cohort who had to come back to Brazil after the PhD or else pay back the scholarship. The Brazilian grant agencies finally decided to enforce that, instead of turning a blind eye. Many came back, others decided to negotiate a halfway solution in which they would stay mostly abroad, but work part time in Brazil. Both played a major role in the #development of the Econ community in Brazil. Those who returned helped consolidate #research and academia in economics, especially in Rio de Janeiro. Publication prizes were perhaps key to make research attractive financially. People started doing less consultancy in order to dedicate themselves more to research. The number of #publications in top-tier international journals grew significantly. This helped build more academic, up-to-date #MSc programs, with #graduates more likely to pursue a PhD. Those who remained abroad were also very important, though. They were the ones who vouched for our students in their PhD applications. Nowadays, most our students receive a #scholarship from the programs they do their PhD studies. They do not want to take Brazilian scholarships because they do not want to be constrained to come back to Brazil. Many still return, strengthening our #academia, even if after a couple of years as a professor abroad. However, as many stay abroad. Most Econ departments have at least one Brazilian professor now. This is in stark contrast with the situation two decades ago. Nice to be part of this #story. I'm part of both groups in some sense. I've initially returned to join FGV EPGE in 2000. I like to think I played a role in the making of the strongly research-oriented department it is nowadays. However, after 4 years, I decided to move to Queen Mary University of London, so that my wife could pursue her PhD at the LSE (already with a full scholarship). I had a very long spell in the UK, before moving back to Brazil for good in 2017. At FGV EESP, I am still witnessing how research in economics and finance has been steadily evolving in Brazil. This year we had a very large number of MSc graduates applying for PhD programs in economics, finance, marketing and statistics abroad. Perhaps it is too soon to say, but it looks like #placement will be awesome. This is how strong we are becoming. I'm so happy that I decided to write this very long post trying to establish how we reached this point. Sorry for the rambling!

Interesting article by the always sharp ScienceGuide colleagues about the impact of a complete elimination of English-taught higher education in the Netherlands, destilling findings from researchers at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Since financial considerations seems to me the main driver for most decision making, let me note that the researchers predict a decrease of the Dutch Gross Domestic Product of up to 1.6%, namely a whooping 15 billion EUR. Promoting Dutch language (academic) skills is of course extremely important, but a total ban on English-taught higher education is unlikely to help here in any significant way, while leading to a significant decrease in the attractiveness and competitiveness of the Dutch innovation ecosystem (in addition to a heavy hit to the NL finances). Targeted actions, taking into account the specifics of each program and university, and in consultation with stakeholders, would be much more efficient. https://lnkd.in/eiSnYuBy original article: https://lnkd.in/edibnXKR
