Long COVID Scotland - Dr. Sally Witcher and Jane Ormerod Sally Witcher, PhD and Jane Ormerod from long COVID Scotland discuss the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and long COVID in the United Kingdom and Scotland. The presenters stressed the lack of available healthcare for those suffering from long COVID and also the lack of gathering data and transparency regarding the magnitude of the problem. Governmental strategies are over reliant on vaccinations and even if vaccines produced ironclad durable immunity, they are not widely available to the general public. Few if any are masking, including medical personnel in major healthcare centers. Similar to many countries, there is rampant misinformation which is inhibiting the public health response. Currently, the United Kingdom's workforce is being adversely affected to a large degree by chronic illnesses, but there remains little discussion or recognition of the impacts of long COVID. Welcome to an enlightening episode of Dr. Anyoha's podcast, where we deep-dive into the critical realm of pediatric vaccinations to understand their schedules, and their role in infants, children, and teenagers' immunization. An experienced pediatrician, Dr. Enyah shares insights about her regular vaccination practice and the benefits they offer to protect children from harmful viruses and bacteria. This episode explores the vaccination schedule predominantly followed in the United States extensively. It simplifies the complex timelines of administering vaccines, starting from the day of birth with the hepatitis B shot, right until transitioning to an adult physician. The episode also sheds light on the annual flu shot, along with other essential vaccines till the child turns 17. Featuring the frequently asked questions by parents, the podcast delves into what specific vaccines are administered to infants at the age of two months and their role in the baby's development. Highlighting the concept of 'bunched together' vaccines administered in one injection, Dr. Enyah discusses how this approach reduces the number of vaccinations needed, easing the process for both parents and children. The episode walks through a detailed vaccine schedule for children from newborns up to 17 years old, including the safety benefits of combining six vaccines into one injection. Insights into vaccine milestones such as two, four, six, twelve, fifteen months, and four years are expounded upon, with each stage introducing specific vaccines to guard against dangerous diseases. Once the four-year-old vaccines are complete, the schedule resumes when the child is 11 years old, with details about boosters and the initial HPV vaccines. The discussion concludes with an exploration into the crucial vaccinations needed when a teenager is heading to college at 16 or 17 years. So tune in and equip yourself with comprehensive knowledge about your child's vaccination journey and the significance of each shot to ensure their health and safety.

As the 77th session of the World Health Assembly nears and we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), which has saved over 154 million lives in the last 50 years, it's crucial to remember that many children still lack access to vital vaccines, especially in conflict and humanitarian settings. To address this, the International Rescue Committee, World Vision International, and Village Reach are co-hosting an event during WHA to strategize on reaching these underserved communities and advancing global immunization objectives. Register to listen to a panel of government officials, policymakers, donors, and NGO leaders to learn more about approaches for reaching the most vulnerable children with immunization. 📆 Thursday, May 30, 2024 🕒 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM CEST 📍 Gavi Global Campus, Geneva (or online) 🔗Register to attend (in-person or virtually): https://lnkd.in/ep6fR--V #WorldHealthAssembly #immunization #vaccinessavelives #humanlypossible #globalhealth

Eulogy might be totally right in this case. Being called courageous by an anti-vaxxer, but being called out as missing context in his comments and assessment of the literature. Reuters conclude that his citations missed context when discussing vaccine safety and efficacy. As an example: Malik claimed it is “nonsense” to suggest vaccines protect people from COVID-19 and reduce hospitalizations, citing a study out of Israel (bit.ly/3G5eyXb). He said: “They’ve looked at the vaccines and unvaccinated group, and the vaccinated group are 27 times higher risk of developing symptoms and eight times higher risk of hospitalization. The truth is that an Israeli study does indeed suggest that people with ‘breakthrough’ infections develop symptoms at a higher rate of 27 times than unvaccinated reinfections – and that hospitalization is eight times higher in the same parameter. But this does not suggest vaccines efficacy data is “nonsense”. “People who have both been infected and received one vaccine are more protected than people who have been infected and have not been vaccinated,” a spokesperson for Maccabi Research & Innovation Center said in an email to Reuters. “Maccabi data shows that the risk of an unvaccinated person getting sick with COVID-19 is 20 times higher than that of a vaccinated person.” https://lnkd.in/eBmqkQ-7 https://lnkd.in/eHwVsD74

Recently, I wrote a blog post for Global Washington on why CSO engagement is key to localization efforts (you can read it here: https://lnkd.in/gYBP5ADT) and called out Kati Collective's work with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and Gavi 6.0, their next five-year strategy. To learn more about Gavi 6.0 and what new CEO Dr. Sania Nishtar and her team are considering, read the thorough explanation below, courtesy of the Center for Global Development. #globalhealth #globaldevelopment #publichealth #vaccination #partnerships https://lnkd.in/gtSWCWch

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) remains a significant cause of severe respiratory illness in infants and young children, making preventive measures a critical component of reducing its health and economic burden. In our recent research paper, we focused on two interventions for RSV in Kenya—a maternal vaccine and a long-acting monoclonal antibody (mAb). These interventions, delivered through existing health platforms, offer promising avenues for protecting vulnerable populations. Our analysis aimed to understand the financial and economic costs of integrating these tools into Kenya’s health system, offering insights that are vital for policymakers and global health stakeholders. These cost projections go beyond simple budgeting—they underscore the importance of health system strengthening as an integral part of rolling out new vaccines. For low- and middle-income countries like Kenya, where health budgets are limited, understanding these costs is critical for making informed, sustainable choices. Our analysis estimates the financial cost of delivering the maternal vaccine at $1.50 per dose, rising to $6.60 when accounting for economic costs. These estimates highlight the primary contributors of expanding RSV interventions, with significant cost drivers including health worker training, service delivery, and programme planning. These findings present an opportunity to save young lives through informed policymaking and sustainable health interventions. In addition to investing in effective programme coordination and health worker training, building resilient health systems that can integrate new vaccines and therapies without overwhelming existing structures is critical to ensuring lifesaving RSV interventions reach those who need them most. Our book uncovers the REAL story of COVID-19, shedding light on an unusual narrative. It challenges the norm by questioning why bats, an unexpected source, unleashed a global pandemic within six months. Moreover, it delves into the ethical dilemma of whose lives are deemed worthy of saving by vaccines. #COVID19 #vaccine #pandemic #book #globalhealth
