Did you know that #spirometry, a method used to measure #lung function, often includes built-in racial adjustments? These adjustments assume that Black and Asian patients naturally have lower lung volumes compared to other races, influencing diagnoses and treatment plans. This can lead to significant disparities in healthcare, such as underdiagnosis of conditions like COPD and reduced access to treatments like lung transplants for Black and Asian patients. Thankfully, in May 2023, the American Thoracic Society recommended a race-neutral approach to interpreting pulmonary function tests, ensuring more accurate results for everyone.
