The Importance of Being an Ethical Leader and How to Do It ? What is Ethical Leadership? Ethical leadership must be a conscious choice. Ethical leadership means that peculiar acts according to a set of elements and values that the majority recognize as a solid foundation for the familiar good. These include honesty, respect, trust, fairness, transparency, and honesty. We pursue goals that are not conducive to our health and well-being. It act in ways we later regret, and produce consequences that hurt ourselves and our loved ones. Why is it important to be an ethical leader? There are many good reasons to be an ethical leader. From a collective perspective, leaders can inspire ethical behavior in those around them. By leading by example and showing the direction of ethical behavior, we inspire others to observe and act in a similar way. In this way, ethical leaders can positively influence by presenting a course of action that can be taken for the greater good. On a personal level, being an ethical leader is essential to trust and reputation. Unethical behavior can automatically kick a leader out of A-League and seriously damage a person's or company's brand. In addition, unethical behavior often lowers self-esteem, leads to suboptimal outcomes, and misses opportunities to reach one's full potential. Ethics and leadership go hand in hand. Some people think they can choose to be profitable and successful or be ethical, but that's not the case. Ethical people and leaders are the driving force behind success. Managers have to face many decisions and negotiations. Their actions clearly put long-term gain ahead of short-term gain. Last but not least, ethical leaders act with integrity. They live what they preach, and their values, words, and actions are aligned and visible to all. Their credibility and reputation will suffer if they do not hold to the same standards they set for others. That’s why the character of being an Ethical leader is very powerful! We've all heard the saying "good people don't leave companies, they leave bad managers & leaders." Unfortunately, many of us have either witnessed this behavior or experienced it firsthand. When leaders lack good character, it affects everyone around them, causing stress, fear, and eventually leading to high turnover rates or even legal risk. Research shows that organizations with leaders who demonstrate high character scores have an average return on assets five times higher than those with low character scores. When leaders exhibit positive character traits, it drives trust and business results. While character traits can't be trained outright, they shouldn't be left to chance. Through feedback, coaching, practice, and modeling, leaders can enhance their authenticity, integrity, courage, and other critical attributes that drive a healthy organizational culture. Let's work together to create a positive work environment by prioritizing character-building in our leaders.
