We've all heard the saying "good people don't leave companies, they leave bad managers & leaders." Unfortunately, many of us have either witnessed this behavior or experienced it firsthand. When leaders lack good character, it affects everyone around them, causing stress, fear, and eventually leading to high turnover rates or even legal risk. Research shows that organizations with leaders who demonstrate high character scores have an average return on assets five times higher than those with low character scores. When leaders exhibit positive character traits, it drives trust and business results. While character traits can't be trained outright, they shouldn't be left to chance. Through feedback, coaching, practice, and modeling, leaders can enhance their authenticity, integrity, courage, and other critical attributes that drive a healthy organizational culture. Let's work together to create a positive work environment by prioritizing character-building in our leaders. Many recruiters and organisations rely heavily on competency-based interviews to guide their assessment of a candidate's suitability. Whilst competency-based interviews have a role in determining someone's ability to do and deliver in a specific capacity, they rarely uncover insights into leadership character. Leadership character is both a predictor and leading indicator of business performance. It is therefore of utmost importance that organisations assess and recruit for this. Character is the sum of a person's values, beliefs and behaviours, and, if we are what we repeatedly do, then our habits too. As such, character is observable, measurable, assessable and reference-able. Harvard Business Review’s “The Case for Leadership Character” highlights that high-character leaders generate ± 5x Return on Assets, whilst low-character leaders undermine the success of even the best business plans. If you would like to learn more about how we assess for leadership character in our search process at Triage, I can be reached here, or on email at ossian.plummer@triage.ag https://lnkd.in/dyt3W7rD.
