REFLECTING BACK ON YPC 2023. The Africa CDC’s Youth Pre-Conference precedes the Annual Int’l Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA). In the year 2023, we were privileged to join fellow African youth from all AU member states from diverse sectors of society and backgrounds to discuss the future of Public Health for the continent. The recent previous YPC held under the margins of the 3rd Annual Int’l Conference on Public Health (CPHIA) with the theme; “Youth Leadership for a Safer and Healthier Africa” realizing the integral role young people continues to play in Advancing the Health security of our Continent. YPC remains the most influential platform for African youth to create meaningful Health synergies, advancing Innovation and Digital Transformation as key in achieving the Africa CDC’s Agenda 2063, and fortifying sustainable futures through universal health coverage and Continental Public Health security. #Youthleadershipinhealth

Ensuring a multi sectoral response is indeed the key for building resilience of health systems and their strengthening.
The COVID-19 pandemic has left a profound and lasting impact worldwide, urging us to adapt our responses for future crises. Children's unique vulnerabilities call for tailored measures in our preparedness and response efforts. While UNICEF and partners are scaling up capacities, the global health architecture requires reform. The Pandemic Agreement must prioritize the best interests of the child, as articulated in Article 3 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Ensuring a multi-sectoral approach to avoid a response solely based on healthcare and health services and recognizing the wider effects and consequences of public health and social measures on children is key. The objective of the first session of this webinar series is to provide an overview of – and discuss – the Global Health and Peace Initiative, what it is and is not; and to illustrate what ‘Health and Peace programming’ can look like through the case of a WHO-IOM project implemented in Cameroon titled ‘Peace through health: Peacebuilding and violence reduction in communities in the far-north through inclusive health and social interventions’ (2021-2023), funded by the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF). https://lnkd.in/e34GJj_u

Mpox and Lessons Learned from COVID-19 As we tackle the current Mpox outbreak in Africa and beyond, it’s crucial to reflect on the key lessons from past disease outbreaks, especially COVID-19. Recently, I reviewed UNICEF EAPRO’s report, “Risk Communication and Community Engagement for COVID-19: Experiences and Lessons Learned.” This report offers valuable insights from various countries in the region, many of which are applicable in other regions. One critical aspect highlighted in the report is - the often-overlooked - need for robust community feedback and social listening systems. These systems are essential for establishing regular and effective feedback mechanisms, enabling countries to plan and design community engagement initiatives based on actual needs. This approach also informs program design and delivery. In my experience, community feedback mechanisms are often initiated – especially during emergencies - without sustainability guarantees. I would love to hear your experiences and any resources you might have on this topic. Let us exchange the lessons we learnt. Please share in the comments!

🌍 Ending AIDS by 2030: The Power of Rights and Community This World AIDS Day 2024, we’re reminded of a bold, achievable goal: ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Under the theme “Take the rights path: My health, my right!”, the World Health Organization calls on global leaders and citizens to: ✅ Champion the right to health ✅ Tackle inequalities that hinder progress ✅ Empower communities to lead the charge 🔑 Why Human Rights Matter When rights are protected, access to healthcare improves. Marginalized communities face fewer barriers, and public health campaigns can thrive. This is the path to eliminating inequalities and ensuring no one is left behind. 🤝 Communities Lead the Way Communities at the forefront of advocacy, education, and support are the driving force for change. Their leadership is essential to reaching vulnerable populations and creating sustainable impact. Together, with human rights at the core, we can achieve a world where AIDS is no longer a public health threat. Let’s make 2030 the year we win this fight. 🌟 Join the movement this December 1st and beyond. Every action counts. #WorldAIDSDay2024 #EndAIDS #HealthForAll #HumanRights #EqualityForHealth

The Bulletin of the World Health Organization has published groundbreaking results that could reshape how we protect children in the midst of conflict. The study, conducted by a consortium of academic researchers, the Malian Ministry of Health, and Muso followed 135,149 individuals over three years across 137 rural sites in Bankass, Mali and set out to answer a universal question: what is the impact of the house call, one of medicine’s oldest institutions? During this interactive webinar, speakers will synthesize key findings from the trial, and identify how the findings can be applied to accelerate local, national, and global efforts for UHC, maternal and health care, and child survival.
