So, companies hired, hired, and hired some more? Pandemic hits and it last for years. Layoffs start. Recession starts. more layoffs more layoffs. and even more layoffs. ugh. What a time to be alive. The positive I've taken away through all this (and being the product of 3 layoffs), is I've seen the bottom and never want to go back down that low again. "how is that a positive?" you ask... while it's an ongoing process, I'm rebuilding myself. I know what I want and it turns out, I have loads of skills that are transferable and have created my own way. Hi! I'm Drew! And oddly enough, I have more control over my schedule and the work I do than ever before. I'm not saying you necessarily need to get 3 jobs in order to be happy, but if you look inward, you maybfind that you've got something more to offer than just a typical 9 to 5. Think about your passions and hobbies. is there a way for you to turn that into profit? Alexis, I understand your frustration and anger towards companies that conduct repeated rounds of layoffs. It can feel like a betrayal when people join an organization with the intention to contribute their skills and efforts, only to be let go due to business decisions that seem detached from the human impact. You make an excellent point - people who have been laid off don't owe gratitude to the company that let them go. The focus should be on highlighting their own skills, expertise and aspirations for their next role. Your suggestions for job seekers are spot on: 1) Clearly articulate your skills, expertise and what you want to do next. This clarity will make it easier for potential employers or connections to recognize a good fit. 2) Leverage your network and be open about your situation. There are people who genuinely want to help and connect you with opportunities if you make your goals clear. The job hunt after a layoff is undoubtedly challenging, but taking control of your narrative, being transparent about your talents and staying determined can go a long way. While companies have to make difficult business decisions at times, the human impact of layoffs should not be minimized. Your anger towards corporations that seem to treat employees as dispensable numbers is valid. Maintaining resilience and focusing on your strengths is the best way forward during this difficult transition.

The last company that laid me off in 2020 did yet ANOTHER round of layoffs this past week. They laid off 800 people. I lost count of how many rounds it’s been … 5 maybe? I am not sure what the financial expertise of leadership is comprised of, but they went public in late 2021 only to do multiple rounds of layoffs since. These layoffs are all too common, and they are beyond frustrating given the state of the market as a whole. While I understand that organizations must make "tough" business decisions, situations like this make me flat out angry. I am angry for every single person who joined that organization with the intention of doing the best job they could, and being tossed aside thanks to “the numbers”. The job hunt won't be easy, it most likely won't be quick, and it will require some extroardinary effort on the part of those trying to land a new role. ⭐️ Make sure you DO share what your skills are, what your expertise is comprised of, and what exactly you want to do next. ⭐️ There are people reading these posts who WANT to help so make sure you’re clear on how they can. In many situations, the ones responsible for making these decisions are far detached from the ones affected, and simply clueless about the consequences down the road for the company. Optimizing headcount and driving efficiencies are a must, however, more often than not, the people driving these outcomes are amongst the laid off. These are the consequences of the short term vision in our business climate, and layoffs alone will never right a listing ship that's about to capsize.

🚫Layoffs don't have to kill your HR brand! Here are 4 steps to take 🚫 Layoffs are a new norm in the tech industry, with companies focusing on cutting costs. While sometimes necessary for the business, they hurt morale and damage your company's reputation. Here are some tips I've learned to keep things positive after layoffs. 1️⃣ 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁. Be honest. Don't try to hide the reasons behind the layoffs. Explain everything clearly to all employees. Hold meetings to answer questions and address concerns from everyone involved. Be respectful and understanding throughout the process. The worst cases for a company's reputation during layoffs? When top executives offer no explanation to employees. They simply terminate months or even years of collaboration with a cold "you're fired, effective today." No chance for questions, no answers provided. 2️⃣ 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀. Offer a fair severance package based on experience and position. Provide resources like career coaching and resume help to ease the transition. Consider extending health insurance for a short time. 3️⃣ 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲. Let them know they're valued and take steps to keep them motivated. Reassure them about their jobs and highlight opportunities for growth within the company. Be honest and keep them informed. 4️⃣ 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲. Acknowledge the impact on the business and show empathy for departing employees. Keep sharing stories about your company culture and the great things about working there. Layoffs are more than just numbers—they're people. In today's rapidly challenging business environment, layoffs might sometimes feel unavoidable. However, it's crucial to remember that every position eliminated is a person whose life is being significantly impacted. I have been a part of great organisations before where they don't terminate immediately instead sit & have a word with their employees as to what is the reason of their low performance? And then take action accordingly, giving room to a candidate to look for another opportunity or improve. But this solution is valid only if employees are being terminated on the basis of their performance. But in this so called corporate world, there is no reason. Out of nowhere, employer feels like now is the time for cost cutting. And Let's just bang on. Understanding your employees isn't just a nice-to-have; it's a must. However, I'm blessed to be a part of such organisation that takes time to understand my concern and helps me to improve accordingly. 5 people I know were blindsided layoffs in the last two weeks. But they shouldn't have been blindsided. Why? Because everyone is at risk. NO matter who you are. There is little security in any job, even working for yourself. The truth is, it's human nature to think "Oh it won't be me." even when you see people around you being laid off. I worked at a company that laid off people like clockwork 3+ times a year. Yet I never updated my resume I never updated my LinkedIn profile I never networked, reached out, stayed relevant, took courses, made new contacts I just watched the chaos around me like I was an outsider looking in. Until it was my turn, and I was laid off after 15 years. I was lost, especially at the beginning of Covid. I should have been prepared, and been networking all that time, even if I wasn't actively looking for a new job. The same when I was laid off last year. The company wasn't doing well. People came and went. They tried everything. I was given a big promotion a year earlier, but I knew my time was coming. I will never be blind-sided by a layoff again. I will be mad, angry, sad, scared when it happens again (I say when, not If) but not caught off guard. There are a million excuses about why you haven't updated your profile or resume, or why you're not networking. But the excuses should stop now. For me and for you. I don't want you to be that person who has no idea what to do now. Work hard. Be loyal to your company. Give them your very best every day. I do. But be loyal to YOU too. To those who have faced layoffs in the past 2-3 months: I want to share transparency about being layoff. The full weight of being laid off doesn’t hit until about 3-6 months into unemployment. We have to go through the grievance period. It’s a reality check many of us go through, depending on our personal circumstances; finances, family, etc. Posting posts stating jobseekers are "not working hard enough" or "needing to fix your resume," please know that these perspectives don't always reflect the full picture. Many people have been navigating long-term unemployment, some for over two years, and it’s not as simple as it seems because you’re just 1-3 months in. I’m not knocking the fact that you’re high in motivation, but don’t place your unrealistic opinions of your experience on 300,000+ people that been unemployed for a long time. I resigned without any offer in hand. Foolish? Maybe. ✅ I am 100% sure you will definitely learn something from this post. Amid layoffs, When the job openings were few. I had to resign. The first call I received from a recruiter was after a month and I haven't heard anything from them after that call. I was obviously scared. I questioned my decision out of fear multiple times. My mentors/seniors wanted me to take a calculative decision and wait for an offer. But in the end, it was my decision and I knew I will make it right. So I resigned. 👉 Why did I do that? I wanted to give myself priority. I knew something was off. My reasons to keep doing the job slowly got limited to 1 i.e salary getting credited to my account. I realised I have become only money driven. I was ignoring that I am not having fun anymore and I don't feel the fire that made me who I am today in this field. So it was high time and I took the risk for myself. I really felt alive, happy and got the fire back since then. I may not be the smartest, but I am definitely my favourite. Conclusion: Take healthy risks for yourself and become alive again. Your fire will always be there for you if you are there for yourself.
