For #NationalLorryWeek, 6 directors and 1 member from the Road Haulage Association and DVSA shadowed each other for the day! This unique exchange brought together leaders from industry and government to see first-hand rigorous roadside safety checks and the complex demands of haulage operations. 📋 We explored how both organisations are supporting talent in the logistics sector. We also showcased our apprenticeship program for Vehicle Standards Assessors, giving them qualifications as IRTEC-certified workshop fitters- a key part of ensuring safe and compliant vehicles on UK roads. RHA participants highlighted the realities haulage firms face, from rising operational costs to the need for skilled drivers and technicians. 🚛 Through better partnerships, we’ll continue protecting you from unsafe vehicles and drivers.

FMCSA's recent decision to no longer require inward-facing cameras in the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Program is a positive development toward the ultimate goal of getting more data to better understand the safety of 18- to 20-year-old drivers. As #ATRI research found, though, motor carriers see greater barriers to participation in SDAP: increased insurance costs foremost among them. Unfortunately, many of these concerns are of the "wait and see" variety, but if everyone waits no one will see. You can see the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dyWtS_Eh

According to a notice scheduled to be published in the Federal Register tomorrow (5/14), FMCSA is rescinding the requirements that carriers wishing to participate in the under-21 Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program (1) have inward facing cameras installed; and (2) register their apprenticeship program with the Department of Labor. These changes stem from Congress's directive in its March 9, 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act that FMCSA remove these requirements to help bolster voluntary participation in the program. The inward-facing camera and DOL apprenticeship registration requirements were widely derided by many in the industry, and almost certainly contributed to the extremely low participation numbers to date. Great to reflect on key insights from the recent Bapcor Drive Expo! Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a compelling session led by Martin Storey, Executive GM of Bapcor New Zealand. Joined by panelists Lesley Yates from AAAA and Lee Marshall from MTA, who delved into the evolving dynamics of automotive apprenticeship programs on both sides of the Tasman. One aspect of the discussion was centered around the need for significant reforms in the training frameworks within Australia and New Zealand. Despite the substantial efforts by the previous NZ Government to 'enhance' skills training through initiatives like Te Pūkenga, the automotive industry very much faces a critical shortage of Automotive Technicians. Why should the responsibility of managing apprenticeship programs stand with Government? My experiences with MITO (Motor Industry Training Organisation) highlighted that when industry experts lead the management and oversight of apprentice training programs it yielded effective results. I strongly advocate for the current Government revert to empowering industry professionals to again take the reins. By leveraging our expertise, we can confidently address and overcome the technician shortage in New Zealand. Let’s put trust back into the hands of those who know our industry best! #AutomotiveIndustry #ApprenticeshipPrograms #ProfessionalDevelopment #WorkforceTraining #NewZealand

🚛 Lets talk about the importance of HGV & LCV Technicians for our Transport Network 🚛 In today’s rapidly evolving transportation industry, HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) and LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) technicians are more vital than ever. These skilled professionals keep our supply chains moving, ensuring the safe and efficient repair of our HGV'S and LCV'S across the country. Yet, the demand for qualified technicians continues to outpace the supply. Investing in apprenticeships and targeted training programs isn’t just about filling roles; it’s about building a sustainable future for our industry. By prioritising training for new and current technicians, we’re equipping the next generation with skills to excel, adapt, and lead in a changing landscape. 🌟 Supporting apprenticeships means: • Developing essential hands-on expertise in cutting-edge vehicle technology. • Creating career pathways that inspire loyalty and long-term growth. • Combating the skills shortage that threatens to slow down industries dependent on transport. Let’s work together to uplift and empower our HGV & LCV technicians with the training and resources they need. Investing in them today builds a more reliable, skilled workforce for tomorrow. Concerns rise over low participation in under 21 year old truck driver apprenticeship program. Since its launch in July 2022, only 113 motor carriers have applied, falling far short of the expected 1,000 carriers and 3,000 drivers. The initiative has faced controversy from the beginning. Opponents cite concerns over safety and argue that the root of driver shortages lies in pay and working conditions, not age restrictions. Despite these challenges, the Biden administration sees apprenticeships as a vital solution to address the ongoing truck driver shortage. To boost participation, recent legislative changes remove certain restrictions on the program, such as mandatory inward-facing cameras in trucks. Will these adjustments lead to increased engagement? https://hubs.li/Q02sfmKG0
FMCSA has rejected 34% of under-21 truck driver applications
