🎓 Mastering the Art of Letters of Recommendation (LORs) - Part 2 🎓 👉 Follow us and leave a comment to get a free sample LOR! 👈 🕒 Timeline and Tips To ensure your LORs are timely and effective: - Start the request process 4-6 weeks before your application deadline. - Send a polite reminder 2 weeks before the due date. - Use a spreadsheet to keep track of all your requests and submissions. - Pro Tip: Set a "fake" early deadline for your recommenders to provide buffer time for any last-minute revisions or delays. 📈 Good vs Bad LORs Good LORs include: - Specific examples that highlight your skills and achievements. - Comparisons that place you in a top percentile, like "top 5% of students I've taught." - Customization to the specifics of the program or job you're applying for. - Insight from recommenders who genuinely know you and your capabilities. Bad LORs feature: - Overly generic or vague statements. - A sole focus on academic metrics without mention of your personal and soft skills. - Inputs from individuals who lack a close professional or academic relationship with you. 📮 Submission Logistics When submitting your LORs, remember to: - Ensure they're written on official letterhead, if applicable. - Have them sent from official or professional email addresses. - Consider waiving your right to view the letters to show trust and confidence in your recommenders. - Double-check all submission guidelines and portal instructions to ensure everything is in order. Planning to take a letter of recommendation on a letter head? This is one mistake that many students have been making, without realising that this isn’t the format used by most universities anymore. The way submitting an LOR works for most top universities is: 1. We have to write in the name, designation, contact number, email ID of your recommender in the application form. Professional email ID is to be given (there are some universities that permit a personal email ID too but need to inform them prior). 2. The old route of getting a recommendation letter on a letterhead and uploading that isn't applicable anymore. 3. Once we submit the application, the recommender receives an email wherein they receive a link. They have to type in/copy paste the inputs there. 4. While most universities have an essay format bLOR to be written, some universities have a list of questions. An LOR is a great way to enhance your application and has more weight to it than people assume! For instance, whenever I’m finalising a letter of recommendation, I make sure that the form highlights the criterias that that particular university looks for in its applicants and ensure validation of the strong points of the application. It’s another way of telling the university more about you, hence requesting you to not be casual about it! Follow UniAdvise for more such tips and tricks! College applications can be overwhelming, but we've got some tips to help ease the anxiety and make the process smoother: 💡Be Authentic: Remember, there are no trick questions. Colleges want to learn about you, so be yourself and don't overthink it. 💡Keep It Concise: Your personal statement doesn't need to be 1,000 words. Share something unique about yourself in a concise and compelling way. 💡Start Early: Use the summer to get ahead on your applications. Many of our students have already completed theirs and are now focusing on senior year. 💡Stay Organized: Make time each week to work on your applications and essays. This helps reduce stress and ensures you're not rushing at the last minute. 💡Check Your Social Media: Ensure your privacy settings are updated. Colleges may check your social media, so be smart about what you post. At JJB Educational Consultants Inc., we specialize in helping students with learning differences navigate the college application process.
