Contemporary medical practice has been largely focused on the treatment of diseases, not on their prevention. The Torah-based approach is quite different. Certainly, treating sick people is a Torah obligation, however there is a far greater priority on the prevention of disease. Rashi, the great Torah scholar, highlighted a verse in Exodus, “I am the L-rd, your healer, and I teach you the Torah and the commandments in order that you may be saved from these diseases-like a physician who says to a man: ‘Do not eat this thing lest it will bring you into danger from this disease.’” Indeed, Maimonides noted, “…we learn that the ability of a physician to prevent illness is a greater proof of his skill, than his ability to cure someone who is already ill.” We’ve been taught since the beginning of time not to weaken our health or shorten our life. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch taught us about G-d’s admonitions, "Do not commit suicide!" "Do not injure yourself!" "Do not ruin yourself!" "Do not weaken yourself!" "Preserve yourself!" We’ve been told that only when the body is healthy is it an efficient instrument for the spirit's activity....Therefore, we’ve been urged since ancient times to avoid everything which might possibly injure our health. It’s been here easily accessible for us all along to absorb. We see, thankfully, more and more contemporary health professionals align with preventive, lifestyle medical practice taught thousands of years ago. I am excited to share a summary from the American Thoracic Society regarding our recent publication in the New England Journal of Medicine. This study emphasizes the clinical, occupational, and economic pros and cons of ignoring race in lung health assessments. The results will significantly impact Black health and clinical trials while the FDA mandates racial and ethnic diversity in clinical and biomedical research. We must prioritize our patients first. We can only do this by thoroughly assessing the downstream consequences of including or excluding race in lung function assessments on an individual patient and community level. #MedicalResearch #HealthEquity #LungHealth #PulmonaryMedicine
