Long-range drone helps Qld authorities target illegal fishing on Great Barrier Reef ABC Sunshine Coast / By Janel Shorthouse April 15, 2024 The Aerosonde 4.7 UAV long-range BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) drone surveys for illegal recreational fishing, which includes when a vessel trolls for pelagic fish, anchors and drops a line, or spearfishing in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. In short: A new drone has been deployed against illegal fishing in Queensland's protected waters. "Virtually undetectable" to illegal fishers, the drone is helping authorities enforce compliance. What's next? Now successfully trialled, the drone will target hotspots known for illegal fishing in the Great Barrier Reef. Life for illegal fishers off the coast of Queensland just got harder thanks to a successful trial of new drone technology. A drone with advanced capabilities was launched from its Gladstone base for testing over summer, as eager fishers took to the southern regions of the Great Barrier Reef. Its mission was to protect the Capricorn and Bunker Group of islands and reefs, an area well-known to authorities as a haunt for illegal fishers. Dubbed an "absolute success", the trial gathered intelligence on vessels fishing out of bounds in protected green zones. #icymi 🚨 Transport Canada - Transports Canada has issued a hefty fine to a BC-based production company for operating #drones too close to wildlife, of which the animals were listed in the Species at Risk Act. Details in the article below. I think what makes this situation worse is that this company applied for a permit to capture footage of animals under this Act years before, but were denied. This is yet another example of understanding rules & reg's when flying, and not selfishly pushing the envelope to get 'that ideal shot'. In my opinion, regulations in #canada are very fair & I want them to stay that way! Hoping this incident sets an example so we see less of this & maintain our place as a forward-thinking nation when it comes to the evolution of drones, or as we call them up here, RPAS.
