Florida State Senator Rosalind Osgood provided comments at the United to End Child Drowning event hosted by the NDPA at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center on Tuesday, August 6. Florida is experiencing record drowning numbers in 2024, and the NDPA was joined by over 50 organizations, state policymakers, and advocates to address this public health crisis. Hi, I'm State Senator Russell Osgood. I represent Senate District 32, which is a very, very diverse district, and to all of the parents and family members that have lost children to drowning. Thank you for your courage and continuing to lift this up to make sure that we protect other children. As I was listening at the statistics, I began to reflect back to 1998 when I worked as the Assistant director of Health and Safety at the American Red Cross. And at that time, we work with the school district to get water safety into the school system. It was a priority for us as I continue to see the data of children that are dying. From a preventable death. I continue to be sad, especially in the black community. And we have a lot of programs, the county and the cities, we all came together and we begin to deal with this issue. But then the alarm stopped ringing. It's almost a silent taboo now and as we think about our responsibility to children. I'm a person of faith, so I believe every child is a blessing from God. I live by this acronym change. Children have a need to grow every day, and I think we have the responsibility of creating those opportunities for them to grow. And as we serve in our individual capacities, we have to level up and talk about this issue in our communities, in our churches, our sororities, our businesses. We have the power to reach. Others with this information and soundness alarm to help protect our children. Then we have to work with strategies that we're going into communities doing home visits to parents that are low income families that are not going to come together and forms like this that might not even have Internet access to go online to access some of these programs. I was very excited to support my colleague Senator Hudson in a nonpartisan manner in the Florida. In it to pass legislation to make vouchers available. But we can't just stop here. We have to do some type of grassroots movement to put this on the minds of everybody in our community. Because for every child that we lose, we lose the skill, we lose the intervention and idea, a doctor, a scientist. So what happens to one of us impacts all of us. I am just overly saddened to continue to lose. Children to such a preventable thing as it comes to water safety. So I came today. Because I want it to be a part of this. I came to publicly make my commitment to help raising this issue, just like we did with the COVID pandemic where we talked about it, you know, over and over again, we have to talk about water safety. We have to educate about barriers for our pools, things that we could do differently to help prevent. Kids love water. It's a happy place for our children. So once they experience the joy and happiness, they don't have the cognitive capacity to understand that we need to supervise them and doing it. They're gonna look for that happy place. And we want them to enjoy that happy place and not lose their life because of it. So thank you for allowing me to be here today. And let's get busy saving lives by spreading the information about water safety all throughout the state of Florida. God bless you. And God Bless America.

The United Nations adopted a two-pronged strategy in recent years, which is a major step towards lowering drowning tragedies globally. The UN General Assembly first acknowledged the terrible consequences of drowning in April 2021, especially in low- and middle-income nations. To stop these tragedies, they demanded a concerted effort from all sectors. British wildlife TV presenter and conservationist Chris Packham joined Good Morning Britain this morning to talk about our #TravelWithKindness campaign and share tips on ethical travelling. Chris said, "if you are abroad, think about the attractions and experiences you will have. Is it ethical? If it isn't, don't buy that ticket. Secondly, please report the cruelties you witnessed to @AnimalsAsia. We are building a dossier of these kinds of interactions. This will enable us to take that back to the UK Government and ask them to make this law workable to protect those animals."
