The Association of Aquatic Professionals is committed to helping prevent drownings nationwide. As we celebrate National Water Safety in May, now is a great time to review the AOAP's RESPECT campaign. RECOGNITION – recognize the signs of non-swimmers, tired swimmers, distressed swimmers and potentially unsafe situations EDUCATION – learn what factors can lead to drowning SUPERVISION – direct, constant supervision is key PHYSICAL BARRIERS – provide fencing, safety covers, alarms and life jackets EXPECTATIONS – understand what to expect from the aquatic environment and the body’s response, know your limits. The Salmon Spirit. It’s the Salmon spawning season now. I am glad to get a chance to witness this natural spectacle. Statistically, only 30 percent of Atlantic salmon survive to spawn again. Most of them die after spawning and the survival rate is about 5 to 10% which get to return to the ocean where they can recover and spawn again the next season. Even though the chances are not high, the salmon still try their best to do it year after year. Surely there is something we can learn from these salmon. How often do we give up even before trying when we know the chances of winning is low? Just like the salmon swimming upstream and defying the odds, we too can find purpose in the journey, not just the destination. Last year, there were 101 accidental drowning deaths in the province according to The BC Coroners Service. These tragedies occurred most often in the summer, with 18 drowning deaths in July 2023. A rip tide, or riptide, is a strong offshore current that is caused by the tide pulling water through an inlet along a barrier beach, at a lagoon or inland marina where tide water flows steadily out to sea during ebb tide. It is a strong tidal flow of water within estuaries and other enclosed tidal areas. The riptides become the strongest where the flow is constricted.
