Disability data plays a vital role in how programs and services are delivered, how policy priorities are developed, and how research is designed. Yet, data collection methods, definitions, and metrics remain stagnant, leading to sustained barriers, neglect, and inaccessibility. A path towards disability data justice is possible. The latest ABS statistical data was released last month, from 2022 - the first data set post COVID. We're now sitting at 5.5m Australians or 21.4% of the Australian population identifying as disabled, as opposed to 4.4m and 17.8% in 2018. There's a number of reasons for this surge, including an increase in the number of young people with disability (due in part to a spike in Autism diagnoses, more awareness and improved diagnostic criteria) and general community attitudes and education about disability slowly improving. There is also a spike in the number of primary carers with disability. https://lnkd.in/gxkkChTZ
The percentage of Australians with disability has surged in a few years. Here’s why
