John Chan, Ph.D. joins the Build Your Ideal Day Podcast series to talk about burnout and what workplaces can do about it. John emphasizes the importance of creating a sustainable work culture to combat burnout, which has affected 38% of employees in the last year. Burnout, defined by the WHO as a syndrome due to chronic workplace stress, includes exhaustion, disengagement, and professional inefficacy. Prevention is crucial, as recovery from burnout is difficult and can lead to wider organizational issues. Effective communication and strong employee-management relationships are essential for understanding workload demands. Organizations are encouraged to experiment with solutions to address burnout rather than seeking immediate fixes, fostering an environment where employees can thrive both personally and professionally. John can be contacted at John.chan@infinite-potential.com.au and you can listen to the podcast here https://lnkd.in/gEcUA_kZ #Mentalwellbeing #buildyouridealday #workplacehealthandwellbeing #thriving

Should organizations be doing more when it comes to burnout? Let me know your thoughts in the comments, but I’ll give you my perspective below. Burnout is not something organizations should be taking lightly and it’s also not something they should be throwing bandaid fixes at. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again— no amount of yoga is going to fix burnout. Leaders have a responsibility to make sure employees have: - a positive work environment - open communication with their team - a leader who listens and makes recommendations - support in taking breaks and having a life outside of work. All issues within an organization start at the top. It’s time for leaders to take responsibility for an issue that was caused by their choices, actions, or lack there of. If your organization is falling short of this, highly recommend tuning into the full episode from this week. I took a deep dive into a recent SHRM article (linked in the podcast comments) about how burnout is getting worse and provided 5 ways to start improving your workplace culture. Full episode is linked in the comments.

I think my burnout is so much worse as a teacher because the culture from the top down is to give every ounce of yourself to everyone else (students, parents, administrators, etc…) and leave very little to nothing for yourself. This is modeled throughout the organization and is a result of a lack of resources from staff to stuff (books, pencils, software, etc). It “feels” like it is an expectation to always go above and beyond even at the sacrifice of your own wellbeing. Of course burnout is rampant in that kind of environment. I’m convinced the mass exodus of teachers leaving the profession is centered firmly in the workplace burnout occurring in this profession. As a side note… I just got the Feelings Toolbox and it’s such a valuable tool to have on hand for my burnout. It is so well organized I can immediately go to the tools that will address the feelings I’m experiencing at any given moment. Love, love, love it! #EmployeeWellbeing #BurnoutPrevention #TeacherStress #BurnoutInEducation #WorkplaceStress #EmployeeRetention https://lnkd.in/grmCzpKX
