In 2017, then-SCONC Justice Mark Martin was speaking at a conference of NC lawyers when he asked them to raise their hands if they were doing pro bono work. “I expected 90%; it was only 10%,” recalled Martin. “It wasn’t that lawyers didn’t want to help; it was a matter that they didn’t know how they could help.” Earlier this year, the North Carolina Pro Bono Resource Center introduced the “how.” It’s a groundbreaking app called Pro Bono Go. All the state’s leading civil legal aid and public interest organizations can place listings on the site. “It’s an online hub where attorneys can find pro bono needs specific to their practice area or interest,” reads its website. “[It’s] North Carolina civil justice community’s one-stop shop for pro bono opportunities.” “[Pro Bono Go] is exactly the direction we need to be going,” said Martin. “The impact is going to be exponential in terms of even being able to create a better platform for expedited connecting needs with available lawyers.” “It’s the first time that pro bono opportunities from all the legal aid providers and advocacy groups around the state all appear on one platform. To me, this is the key feature for volunteers because instead of being offered a single pro bono project in a sort of ‘take-it-or-leave-it’ approach, volunteers can see the whole range of different opportunities and choose one that really speaks to them,” said Richard Dietz. I am so excited to share that my article, "Doorway or Barrier: Increasing Access, Scope, and Efficiency through Intake Procedures," co-authored with Lila Sevener was published in the MIE Journal for Legal Aid. This article is a product of passion meant to envision the ways in which we can continue to expand and grow for those we aim to serve and to explore the tangible ways in which advocates can create more accessible spaces. After serving over a year as a paralegal in legal aid, there are so many lessons I have been grateful to learn. This article focuses on one of the most significant things an advocate can do: create safe spaces for people to explore their legal issues through a process that empowers. If interested, you can read the article attached to this post! The world of law, administration, and bureaucracy in general, are not easily and readily accessible spaces. Part of the work done in legal aid is to act as a sort of crossing guard, providing directions to those who may be lost or overwhelmed and point them in a right direction. And intake is one of the best times to take on this role. While we cannot reasonably practice every type of law, we hold more awareness of those people doing great work in many fields than those who come to our office. So, while someone opens up about their issue or issues, we can take that as an opportunity to spot for legal matters that exists beyond the primary concern someone is presenting about and point them in the right direction. These are the smalls ways in which we can offer more equal access to the justice system. I want to take a moment to thank Lila Sevener for all her work on this article and her everyday commitment to serving our community. She is a true advocate with a fierce commitment to creating holistic legal aid and equity for all persons. I am glad to have had her guidance and keen insight while we wrote this article. I would also like to thank Philadelphia Legal Assistance for this opportunity and shout out the life changing work being done there. #legalaid #publicinterest #MIE #access #equity #justice #intake
