So applicable to various fields, including social work.
At TCI, we love analogies. We think of barriers to change like peeling back the layers of an onion. 🧅 First layer is almost always - "I don't have time", "we don't have resources" or "it's not my job". But what's most important is the layers underneath - these are the real reasons that people aren't changing. We are 😍 loving this image by @Sonia_Sparkles & how it so beautifully parallels how we think about barriers. #QItwitter #ImpSci #Change #SystemsChange #SocialJustice

🌍 The First Twinning Success Story in the NEPHEWS Project! At SOLARIS, we’re celebrating a significant milestone as Dr. Malgorzata Palusińska’s collaboration on the POLYX beamline has become one of the first successes of the NEPHEWS project. This initiative is more than just a program; it’s a bridge that connects early-career scientists with experienced research teams across Europe, giving them access to world-class facilities and advanced synchrotron techniques. Dr. Palusińska, whose research focuses on metal concentrations in plant samples, shared, “Even during my doctoral studies, I dreamed of using synchrotron methods, but I didn’t have access to the essential apparatus. Now, thanks to NEPHEWS, I can observe live plant tissue—without freezing them—on Centrum SOLARIS POLYX line, which is invaluable for my research on zinc and iron concentrations.” Our team leader, Magdalena Pypka, sees twinning as a “win-win” for everyone involved, bringing fresh perspectives, questions, and knowledge to the whole team. Projects like NEPHEWS underscore the value of collaboration, not only building bridges within Europe’s research community but also empowering the next generation of scientists to drive forward new ideas. This isn't an image from a Stephen King horror novel. This is one of the world's first X-rays. Going all the way back to 1895. I have always been fascinated by the origin of things. The discoveries that change us. The inventions that transform our lives. These days, X-rays are ubiquitous. You can't go to a hospital or a clinic without a doctor ordering one, for pretty much everything. But imagine there were days when an X-ray wasn't around, and doctors had to guess what may be happening inside you. Until, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, found a new type of ray being emitted from a cathode-ray tube. This ray, he would find, to his amazement, could pass through most objects, including the human body, stopping at the bones. He took an x-ray of his wife's hand, and that is the image you see. Roentgen named it X-Strahl or X-Radiation because he had no idea what that ray was. Here we are, more than 100 years later. We still call it X-ray, not because we don't know anything about it, but because it has been the X factor in improving medical diagnosis beyond anything doctors ever imagined. Roentgen's ray took off. Scientists around the world started duplicating his experiment, and just 6 months later, doctors started using X-rays to find bullets lodged in soldiers. Not many thought of the dangers of radiation then. In fact, shoe stores in the 1940s offered 'free X-rays' for customers to see the bones in their feet. Now, of course, we are aware of the dangers of radiation, but where would we be without X-rays? And without Roentgen's altruism? The scientist donated his Nobel Prize to the university, didn't take any patents on X-rays, and believed his discovery should benefit the world. It came at a deep personal cost. He would die in poverty after going bankrupt. We have all had an X-ray sometime or the other. But perhaps we never knew we should send a ray of gratitude across the universe to Roentgen for his remarkable discovery and even more remarkable service to the world through his large-heartedness. 📚 Word of the Day: Quixotic Have you ever had a dream so bold and idealistic that it seemed impossible? That’s what we call quixotic – extremely idealistic, unrealistic, and impractical. 🌪️ At Manthena American School, we encourage students to dream big—even if their goals seem quixotic! Because every great achievement begins with a bold, “unrealistic” idea. 🌟 Use quixotic in a sentence today: 💬 “Her quixotic ambition to solve world hunger started as a small project in school.” #WordOfTheDay #VocabularyBoost #ManthenaAmericanSchool #LifelongLearning #Quixotic #EducationForLife
